Drum Bingo to resume as community centre reopens

The weekly parish bingo in Drum is set to resume on Friday 21st January with the reopening of Drum Community Centre, Athlone following recent weather damage.

Bingo had been called off for an unprecedented seven weeks in a row, initially due to the severe weather conditions and then due to damage caused by burst pipes in the community centre. A number of other events were also forced to cancel or find alternative venues while the building was closed, including the Roscommon GAA Convention, which was due to be held there on Saturday 8th January.

The south Roscommon community centre was forced to remain closed after Christmas, in the interests of health and safety, as the water supply had to be disconnected while repair work was carried out on the heating system. The repairs have now been completed, and the sports hall reopens on Monday 17th January. Bingo resumes on Friday night at 8.30pm.

The Irish language pre-school Naíonra Réalta Geala, which operates out of Drum Community Centre, had also been forced to close for a number of days before and after Christmas due to frozen pipes, but reopened on Wednesday last, 12th January.

Committee secretary Aidan McEvilly thanked people for their understanding over recent weeks and said “this is an important community service for the greater Athlone area. We look forward to welcoming people back to bingo in Drum and extend a warm welcome to all to come along on Friday nights and join in the fun, either by playing or by helping out.”

Clann na nGael AGM

Update on repairs to the clubhouse
There was extensive damage to the clubhouse pipework during the recent freezing weather. PJ Duignan and Padraig Harney have put in some great work to fix some of it. The good news is that mains water has been restored to the clubhouse. Central heating system leaks have been repaired and this is now working again. There was no water damage so far to the fixtures and fittings, including the museum. However toilets in the "old building" dressing rooms are damaged and out of order. All showers remain out of order due to various problems with pumps and mixers, however the water heating system is working, so it is hoped to restore showers to dressing rooms as soon as possible. As a result the main pitch will remain closed until further notice. The training pitch can be booked in the usual way.

Roscommon County Convention
As you maybe aware, Clann na nGael were to host Roscommon County Convention for the first time in Drum Community Centre before Christmas. However it was postponed due to the bad weather. Convention was subsequently rescheduled for the 8th of January 2011. Unfortunately, Drum Community Centre suffered a number of serious leaks in the thaw so we were forced to inform the County Board that we were unable to host it. Thanks to all the volunteers who agreed to help out in organising the event and those who had agreed to help on the day. The 2010 Convention will now take place in St. Brigid's Clubhouse, Kiltoom this Saturday 8th January.
