Clann Na nGael Skills Clinic
A very successful Athlone Springs Hotel sponsored Skills Clinic came to an end last Friday in Johnstown. Over a hundred enthusiastic footballers aged between 10-16 took part in the clinic and were trained in all skills of Gaelic Football from the fundamentals of the game of catch and kick to the more advanced evasive and tactical skills. The purpose of the clinic was to encourage everybody to enjoy sport and improve his or her skill level. The coaches each day introduced a new skill to each player and this was demonstrated by inter county stars like Shane Curran, Darren Lennon, Conor Mortimer, Kieran Fitzgerald, Donie Shine, Cathal Cregg, Michael Finneran and David Flynn. Each player also passed on their advice on how to improve their skills and what to do in match scenarios and there was particular interest in the different styles of free-taking. Former Westmeath hurling manager and current St Faithleach's manager Seamus Qualter along with former Clann legends Eamon Snr McManus, Eamon Jnr McManus and Joey Connaughton were on hand to give advice and coach during the many blitzes held throughout the week. Each participant in the camp also got Clann Na nGael gear including jerseys which were worn all week. On Friday the parents were treated with a demonstration of skills learned, which was followed by presentations and refreshments. The skills clinic followed on from a very successful summer camp the previous week, mainly due to the hard work of Declan and Alona Rock, Padraig Naughton, Caroline Geraghty and Gary Quinn who co-ordinated the week. The club would like to thank all that helped out behind the scenes with the gear and the facilities, the coaches, the schools, the sponsors, those who prepared all the food Friday, the parents and most of all the boys and girls who made it a worthwhile and enjoyable week.

Gaelic4Girls
Last Sunday the girls from the Monksland area who participated in the above programme were brought to Croke Park to take part in a National Blitz. Over 350 girls and 38 teams from Derry, Dundalk, Drogheda, Monaghan, Dublin and Limerick also took part in what was a very professional run event. All the girls got a brief history and tour of stadium and dressing rooms, coaching sessions and fun games with the Ladies All-Stars, a packed lunch and various souvenirs of the day including a medal, bag, skills ball, posters etc. The pitch was cordoned off into 6 areas with 5 pitches for the mini-games and a sixth area for coaching, penalties etc., and the whole event ran very smoothly. Despite the hectic schedule which including every team playing three 14 minute games and heavy demand on water and drinks due to the brilliant sunshine, every girl truly enjoyed the experience with many family and friends sitting in the stands looking on. The girls also got numerous autographs of players and photos with the Brendan Martin Cup.
All-Stars present included Valerie Mulcahy, Breige Corkery and Angela Walsh from Cork, Caoimhe Marley and the O' Donnell twins from Armagh, Grainne Nulty from Meath, Claire O'Hara from Mayo, Niamh Kindlon from Monaghan and many current Dublin players also helped out. The whole concept and opening of Croke Park to these girls was brilliant and for about 5 hours they were treated like players on All-Ireland Final Day. Mary Beades and the Ladies Association, Roscommon Sports Partnership and the various coaches deserve great credit for the hard work and also the girls and their parents.

Congratulations to Orla O'Neill who was picked to play in the Mini-Sevens which will be held in Croke Park on All-Ireland Semi-Final day on August 31st. Also the following were winners in the Feile Draw, Ailish O'Brien c/o Leanne and Anna, Arron Wall c/o Gillian Wall, David Fallon c/o Hazel Menton, Betty McLoughlin c/o Deirdre Ward and Paula Ryan c/o Kirsty Warby.

Congratulations to the Junior B team who qualified for the Mid-South semi-final following a good win over Feurty on Saturday. The U-12 Division 1 can win the league if the win against Castlerea this Monday and the Division 2 team who had a another great victory over Roscommon Gaels last week.

Clann na nGael Notes

Lotto Results
Numbers drawn 12, 20, 23, 24. No Jackpot Winner. 3 Match 3 winners receiving €70 - A Monahan c/o Monahans; C. Murray c/o Eileen Whelan; A. Hardiman c/o Vincent Harney. Next weeks Jackpot will be €7,600

U-14 Championship
The U-14 team defeated Boyle in the first championship match in the group stages last Thursday in Johnstown. Clann got off to a good start with points from Rian McNamara and James McManus but by the 20th minute they trailed by 4 points before a penalty from Ruadhri McManus put them back in the game and left the half-time score 1-5 to 0-8. Clann got off to a good start in the 2nd half with a goal and two points before Boyle scored 2 goals to go 2 points ahead. Goals from Ultan Harney and James McManus put Clann back in the driving seat and they outscored Boyle five points to one in the last seven minutes to end this rollercoaster of a match. It was a day that everybody played their part, a solid defence and seven different players getting on the scoresheet. They now play Castlerea next Thursday in Castlerea.
Team: Kevin Molloy, Patrick Harney, Steve Flynn, Shane Petit, Martin Costello, Paul Mannion, Oliver O'Neill, Ruadhri McManus, Darragh Petit, Shane Lennon, Ultan Harney, Malcolm Dalton, Eoin Forde, James McManus, Rian McNamara. Subs used Cian Cunniffe, Darragh Golden, Dylan Carberry.

Summer Camp
Luckily the weather stayed dry most of the week, but even bad weather would not have dampened the enthusiasm of the more than fifty kids who took part in the summer camp last week. At the start of the week every child got a Clann jersey along with socks and shorts and those jerseys didn't come off for the whole week, of what was a very successful camp.

Feile Finals in Cavan
Last Friday morning the U-14 girls left Johnstown for the Feile Finals in Cavan. They played their first match Friday afternoon defeating the host club Laragh easily. On early Saturday morning they also light work of another Cavan team Drumlane and then faced Armagh Harps in the group showdown at noon. The Clann girls produced another great performance winning comfortably. Altogether in the three group matches, they only conceded five points. So Saturday evening in Kilnaleck, they faced Cahir from Tipperary and despite lots of early possession the Clann girls were hit with  two goals against the run of play. Clann pushed forward looking for the crucial scores in the second half but a physically stronger Cahir team punished any breakdown in attack and deservingly ran out winners. Cahir were eventually beaten in the final by a Arklow team who were probably the most impressive team in Cavan over the weekend. Clann would like to pay tribute to their excellent hosts Laragh who sang their hearts out in support of Clann in the semi-final and also provided any amount of food and refreshments to players and supporters alike, over the weekend. Also congratulations to Gillian Wall who won her way through to the skills final over the weekend but luck deserted her in the final. All in all it was an excellent weekend, and thanks to the girls, mentors, management, supporters and fundraisers and sponsors who made it all possible.

The U-10 girls performed excellently last week against Four Roads. The next round is against Padraig Pearses in Johnstown on Tuesday evening. Roscommon Intermediate Ladies had a big win over Clare in the championship in Johnstown on Sunday. An interesting spectator was Davy Fitzgerald, the Waterford manager who was in good form after their comfortable win over Antrim the previous day.

Drum Community Centre to host ‘Know Your Neighbour Weekend’

This coming weekend people across the country are being encouraged to make a special effort to get to know their neighbours. The initiative is being promoted by Macra na Feirme and ESB, and encourages people to organise some event in their own locality to get to know their neighbours better. Drum Community Centre is the venue for one such event, where a tea and coffee morning is being held on Sunday 13th July from 10.30am to 1pm.

The Drum area of south Roscommon has experienced much development and growth in recent years due to the expansion of Athlone. Unlike other areas, however, it remains a vibrant rural community. This weekend is an opportunity for the residents – both new and old – of the wider Drum area to join together to get to know each other.

Catherine Buckley, Macra national president, explains “An unfortunate symptom of modern Ireland is that as people become busier and more tied up with their own lives, the concept of community has declined and many people do not know their own neighbours.”

“The purpose of this initiative is to open a window of opportunity - over a specific weekend - whereby people will be inspired to make a small effort to mingle in a neighbourly way with people living in their own neighbourhood.”

The event in Drum is being organised by the Community of Drum website www.drum.ie, and committee member Aidan McEvilly says that they are looking forward to meeting lots of local people this Sunday. “This is an ideal opportunity for anybody who might not be too familiar with the area to come in and find out about the community they live in and meet some of the people who live here, and the community centre is the perfect venue for such an event.”

“Whether you’ve lived in the area all your life or have just moved to Drum, you’re invited to join us this Sunday morning for a cup of tea or coffee and a chat with your neighbours and take a look around the community centre too.”

Earlier this year Drum Community Centre marked its twentieth anniversary, and launched the Community of Drum website, which went live in January. The drum.ie site is updated regularly and includes the weekly parish newsletter, and aims to be a hub for the entire community by providing information about various organisations in the area.

Further details of Know Your Neighbour Weekend can be found on the Drum website www.drum.ie or the national site www.knowyourneighbour.ie
