Roscommon Scór update

Clann capture Connacht crown

Elphin Community Centre was the venue for the 2009 Scór Sinsear Connacht Final and a capacity crowd enjoyed over five hours of traditional entertainment, song and dance.

The first result of the afternoon to be known was from the Question Time competition, where the team of Tom Harney, Sean Murray and Tom Nolan captured the title. Despite a very tough set of questions from question master Jerry Doody they defeated reigning Connacht champions Bornacoola, of Leitrim, Mountbellew-Moylough, of Galway, Claremorris of Mayo and St. Molaise Gaels of Sligo. They will now be hoping to repeat their 2005 success and add an All-Ireland title to their county and provincial titles.

Unfortunately, despite some excellent performances, this was to be Roscommons sole success of the evening. The first performers on the stage were Kilglass Gaels in the Figure Dancing competition. They danced The Cross Reel but finished runners-up to reigning champions Glencar Manorhamilton.

In the Solo Singing contest Sarah Corcoran of Padraig Pearses sang The Mountain Streams, where the Moorcocks crow but she lost out to her Galway counterpart Claire Igoe from Corofin. Corofin made it two title in a row when they defeated Ballinameen, Garrymore, Bunninadden and Glencar-Manorhamilton.

The next competition was the Recitation and it held particular significance for the home club. Elphins Michael Rock represented Roscommon and his son, Dermot, represented London. Despite excellent performances by both Rock Snr. and Jnr. the title went to Catriona Lynskey from Garrymore, Co. Mayo. In the Ballad Group contest St Dominics performed Ringsend Rose and the Stocktons Wing classic Beautiful Affair but they lost out to Mountbellew-Moylough from Galway. St. Dominics were also Roscommons representatives in the Novelty Act competition with their play entitled Foreign Affairs. Despite a great performance they were defeated by Leitrim club Sean O Heslins.

In the final competition of the evening, Set Dancing, the home club, Elphin, represented Roscommon. They danced the Roscommon Lancers Set but lost out to the reigning champions Abbeyknockmoy from Galway.

Coiste Scór Ros Comáin would like to congratulate Elphin GAA club on successfully hosting the competition and Alastair Beegan, from Lecarrow, who did an excellent job as Fear an Tí.

The following will now represent Connacht in the All-Ireland Finals, which take place in the INEC, Killarney on Saturday April 18th :

  • Figure Dancing: Glencar Manorhamilton, Co. Leitrim
  • Solo Singing: Claire Igoe representing Corofin, Co. Galway
  • Instrumental Music: Corofin, Co. Galway
  • Recitation: Catriona Lynskey representing Garrymore, Co. Mayo
  • Ballad Group: Mountbellew-Moylough, Co. Galway
  • Question Time: Clann na nGael
  • Novelty Act: Sean OHeslins, Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim
  • Set Dancing: Abbeyknockmoy, Co. Galway

Corn Cormac Mac a Ghoill

As well as the eight Scor disciplines down for decision counties will also battle it out for the Cormac McGill Cup. The Cup was donated by the Connacht Council to honour the late Cormac, a former Cathaoirleach of Coiste Scór Liatroma and member of the national executive, who worked so hard to promote Scór and the Irish language, at all levels of the Association for many years. Points were awarded to counties based on the placing in all competitions and it was a fitting tribute that in this, the first year of the competition, the title went to Leitrim.

The cup was presented to Sean Suilleabhin, Cathaoirleach of Coiste Scór Liatroma by Ailbhe and Mary McGill. The final table was as follows:

  • Leitrim 29
  • Galway 26
  • Roscommon 24
  • Mayo 20
  • Sligo 12

All Ireland Tickets

As mentioned above the All-Ireland Final takes place in the INEC, Killarney on Saturday April 18th at 3pm. Tickets are priced at 22 and to place an order contact your local Scór officer as soon as possible or order them directly from Diane in the County Board Office, before 4pm on Wednesday April 1st.

Clann na nGael Notes

CELEBRATING 125 YEARS OF G.A.A
CELEBRATING 73 YEARS OF CLANN NA NGAEL G.A.A CLUB

O'ROURKE CUP
Clann na nGael   1 – 10   Kilbride   2 – 9
The Clann na nGael Athlone Springs Hotel team played Kilbride on Saturday evening last at a bitterly cold Kilbride. Clann were very slow to get out of the blocks and were 5 points down at the break.
Clann came out all guns firing after the break and a Darragh Lennon Goal gave Clann hope, but Kilbride held for a 2  point win.
Clann team: Ronan O'Reilly, Mark Killian, Oliver Harney, Ray Fallon, Cormac Harney, Daniel Harney, Niall McManus, Gary Shine, Brian Goode, Darragh Lennon, Mark Shine, David Kelly, Ronan Killian, Darragh Shine, Enda Kenny.

DIVISION 4 LEAGUE
Clann na nGael   1 – 8   Oran   1 - 10
The Clann na nGael Samz Bar Junior B team played Oran in Oran on Saturday evening last. Clann started well, but Oran assumed control mid way through the second half, and but for a double save from Phelim o Neill things could off been worse. Clann battled hard to the end but came up short.
Clann team: Phelim O'Neill, Michael Hogh, Cathal Kenny, Damian Wall, Alan Rock, Cathal Hannon, Padraig Kelly, Kevin Naughton, Colin Nicholson, Mark Duignan, Fergal Shine, Niall Lennon, Keith O'Neill, Sean Ward, Alan Shine.

MINOR LEAGUE
Clann na nGael   1 – 14   Boyle   2 – 9
The Clann na nGael minor team recorded their second win in a row against Boyle on Sunday last. Clann were slow out of the blocks with Boyle hitting 2-1 in the first 5 minutes. Clann finally shock the long journey out of their legs with points from Emmet Kenny, Cathal Shine and Francis Mc Manus. Cathal Shine rattled the back of the Boyle net to leave Clann trailing by 2 points at the break.
Boyle sent over 2 points after the restart to go 4 points up, but Clann hit back with 6 without reply to go 2 points up. Things could have been worse but for 2 great Thomas Keogh saves, and a goal line clearance from Cathal Duignan. Clann never let go of the lead and ended up deserving 2 point winners. This was the best Clann performance of any team in the club this year, and everyone put their shoulder to the wheel for the greater good of the team.

G.A.A 125 Celebration
The GAA has designated Sunday 10th of May as Lá na gClub. On that day, Clann will celebrate the anniversary with over 2,000 GAA clubs around the country, so keep that day free in your diaries! We'll send out more details of exactly what's going to happen nearer the day. To mark the 125th anniversary of the GAA, we are setting up a museum in the clubhouse. The museum will hold a collection of items of interest and memorabilia from over the 73 years of Clann's history; cups and trophies won by the club, footballs from important matches, old jerseys, photos, old videos, match programmes, ticket stubs, match reports, and other items of interest. We are dependent on the goodwill of the community in putting the museum together. If you have any item that you would like to donate or loan to the museum, please bring them to the clubhouse any Monday evening between 7pm and 8pm.

21 Years of Drum Community Centre

Today, 18 March 2009, marks the 21st anniversary of the official opening of Drum Community Centre. On Friday, 18 March 1988 - the day after Clann na nGael played in the All-Ireland Club Football Final - the people of Drum gathered as the Bishop of Elphin, Most Rev. Dr. Dominic Conway, joined 'Mayor of Drum' Kathleen Shine to officially open the new community sports and social centre, which represented over five years of hard work and dedication by all involved. Below is an extract from from the Westmeath Independent of the following week.

Drum Centre a monument to community spirit
By Eddie Rogers
The magnificent Community Centre at Drum which was blessed and officially opened last Friday night in the presence of a huge attendance, representatives of the entire parish will, for many years to come, serve as a fitting monument to the deep and abiding community spirit which enables an ambitious undertaking to be successfully completed. For a small rural carea to provide such an elaborate facility is a remerkable achievement which reflects nothing but the highest credit on all who were associated with the ambitious project.

As we mark the 21st anniversary today, we say thanks to all those who have supported the centre in any way over the years, we remember those who are no longer with us and we look forward to the next 21 years.

If you want find out more about the centre, or get involved, please visit the website or feel free to contact us. Remember, it's your commnunity centre - be part of it.

Clann na nGael Notes

Roscommon Ladies Rose Competition
The Roscommon Ladies Rose Ball will take place on Friday, the 20th of March at 8:30 pm in the Abbey Hotel. It promises to be an exciting event with Roses from all over the county, representing their local GAA club, competing to be crowned the Roscommon Ladies Football Rose of 2009. Aine Seery from Clonellan will be representing Clann na nGael Ladies Club. There will be 18 Ladies Clubs around the County represented by Roses and competition will be stiff on the night with plenty of local rivallry being renewed. Hopefully she will bring back the first of many titles to the club. The lucky winner will then go on to represent the Roscommon Ladies County Board in the Annual Rose of Roscommon Event which takes place later in the year.
At this stage in the year those people associated with Ladies football in Co. Roscommon are getting well acquainted with standing on cold wet and mucky pitches. Wonderful supporters stick by their local teams through thick and thin in sunshine and rain. This week your club will be looking for your support again, although in the much more comfortable surroundings of the Abbey Hotel. There won’t be a pair of football boots in sight as the Roscommon Ladies Rose Ball gets into full swing. It is a chance to see your club win its first county title of 2009 in what promises to be the social highlight of Roscommon Ladies GAA.
The event promises to be an exciting and entertaining event for all. There will be entertainment both on and off the stage and who knows you might even win a few euro if you can correctly predict the winning Rose. Anyone wishing to support Aine can contact Niamh Fallon 086-3681907, Kelly Killian 087-6478286 or Sean Murray 087-9573759. Tickets for the event cost only €15 and are available from any club official and there will be a bus running on the night. Best of luck to Aine from everyone at the club.

U16 Ladies Semi-Final
Clann na nGael 3-4 St Marys 5-7
Clann girls relinguished their under 16 title in the semi-final in Cushla Park on Sunday. Kayleigh Dunning opened the scoring with a neat point and Clann retook the lead when Aisling Lennon fired over from a tight angle. A great move was then finished to the net by Rebecca Naughton but that was the last time Clann lead in the game as St Marys scored 2-4 without reply to lead by 2-6 to 1-2 at the break and Clann had Caroline O’Neill in goal to thank for some brave saves. On the resumption a Gillian Egan point was followed by a brilliant goal from Ciava Dunning to leave just four points between the teams with just over 10minutes to go. But St Marys hit three goals in as many minutes to finish the match as a contest. A Gillian Egan effort on goal was pushed over the bar before wing back Gillian Wall stepped inside and let fly from 30 metres with the outside of the right foot into the top left corner for a great goal. On the day the team never really got going despite some great performances from Amy Curley, Katie Rock, Orla O’Neill, Rebecca Naughton and Aisling Lennon. Hopefully most of these players will have a say in under 14 and minor championships later in the year.
Team: Caroline O’Neill, Lianne O’Connor, Sorcha McManus, Jennifer Duignan, Gillian Wall 1-0, Amy Curley, Karen Nicholson, Kimberley Finlass, Orla O’Neill, Rebecca Naughton 1-0, Kayleigh Dunning 0-1, Gillian Egan 0-2, Aisling Lennon 0-1, Ciara Galvin, Ciava Dunning 1-0.
Subs: Katie Rock, Katie Ward, Anna Shine, Louise Curley, Emma Lennon, Aoibhin Golden.

Registration Day
There will be registration in Jonnstown on Sunday morning next for boys and girls. Registration will commence at 11 15pm and will continue until 12 30 pm. All are welcome and we hope to see quite a few new faces as well.

Is cuma an bhfuil tú líofa sa teanga nó nach bhfuil, tugtar cuireadh duit teacht agus cúpla focal a labhairt, píosa spraoi a bheith agat agus taitneamh a bhaint as cupán tae nó caife.

Is pobal tuaithe é an Droim i ndeisceart Ros Comáin. Níl sé ach dhá mhíle taobh thiar de lár Bhaile Átha Luain. Tá an t-ionad pobail suite sa Chrannach, baile fearainn a bhí ar cheann de sheacht gceantar Ghaeltachta i gContae Ros Comáin de réir Acht na dTithe (Gaeltacht) 1929.

‘Cupán Tae’ in Drum for Seachtain na Gaeilge

Drum Community Centre invites you to join them for a ‘cupán tae’ to celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge. The annual festival runs nationwide until St. Patrick’s Day and aims to promote the use of the Irish language in everyday life. National and local events are being organised across the country, and Drum Community Centre in Athlone is set to play its part in promoting our native tongue by hosting a coffee morning on Saturday, 14 March from 11am to 2pm. Regardless of how much or little Irish you have, you are invited to come along and speak a cúpla focal, have a bit of fun and enjoy a cupán tae.

Drum is a rural community in south Roscommon, only two miles west of Athlone town centre. The community centre is located in the townland of Crannagh, which was one of seven Gaeltacht areas in county Roscommon, according to the Housing (Gaeltacht) Act 1929.

Further details are available on the Drum website at www.drum.ie or the official Seachtain na Gaeilge website www.snag.ie
