Roscommon Lamb Festival 2011

Roscommon Lamb Festival 2011 is a celebration of family fun, great food, farming, heritage and community spirit in County Roscommon. Taking place on the May Bank Holiday from Wednesday 27th April to Monday 2nd of May 2011, including a world record attempt on Saturday in Dr. Hyde Park.

We are now in our fourth year and growing from strength to strength with a vision of creating a nationally recognised festival for the Roscommon and Shannonside regions. Based on the fact that Roscommon has the highest lamb output in the country, the festival celebrates lamb in a diverse range of events over the course of the weekend.

Our schedule for 2011 is the most comprehensive since the festival started, with over 30 events taking place over the course of the weekend! Majority of our events are free and the festival itself is a not for profit event.

This year’s highlights include:
  • World Record Attempt – Most Knitters in One Place - a fantastic occasion to put Roscommon on the map for using the wool of our most famous product!
  • Sheep Farm Walks, Walking & Heritage Tours – including St John’s Wood, Rathcroghan & the Dominican Abbey.
  • BBQ Brazilia & Irlanda – Family Brazilian BBQ with Irish Lamb and music from Defcon 5 from 9pm-12am.
  • Family Fun Sunday – in Loughnaneane Park and Market Square with a jam packed schedule…
  • Wool Craft Village – with sheep shearing, wool spinning, weaving, feltmaking, knitting, dyeing, interactive weaving project and more
  • Pet Lamb Competition
  • Little Bo Peep & Boy Blue Competition
  • International Sheepdog Trials with competitors from Ireland,Germany, Sweden, Hungary, Canada and the UK.
  • RLF2011 Farmer’s Market with cooking and butchering demonstrations, fresh local produce, entertainment and more.
  • Teen Student Fashion Expo followed by a Youth Disco/Live Band.
  • Sporting events including cycling, kayaking and the Carer’s Marathon.

Scrap Metal Collection
Clann na nGael GAA club will collect for free the following scrap metal: crashed cars, all household metals, loose scrap and batteries. Collection days will be on Saturdays. Contact Ollie on 087-2988132 or Pádraig 087-1699687.

Fancy Dress Cycle
A Fancy Dress Cycle through the town of Athlone will take place on Sunday 1st May 2011 at 2pm to raise money for a new Sensory Unity for children with Autism at Summerhill Primary School. 'Dear Frankie'

Clann na nGael Notes

O'Rourke Cup
Clann na nGael 0–15 Elphin 1–8
The Clann na nGael senior team secured their second brace of points in the O'Rourke Cup on Sunday last at the expense of Elphin. The Large crowd present at a sun drenched Johnstown saw Clann race into an early 0-4 to 0-1 lead, with a hat trick of points from Jonathon Dunning and a solitary effort from Donal Shine. Elphin rallied in the latter stages of the first half and led by 0-6 to 0-5 at the interval.
Clann were the dominant team at the restart and were back in the lead by the midway point of the second period with points from Donal Shine, Jonathon Dunning and Ronan Gavin. Elphin reduced the arrears to the bare minimum with 2 more points. Clann kicked on again with points from David Lennon, Alan Dunne, Donal Shine, and Enda Kenny which put clann 7 points to the good with time nearly up. Elphin scored a consolation goal with the last kick of the game. Clann ended up deserving winners.

Clann na nGael 3–6 Padraig Pearses 3–4
Clann commenced their special minor league with a victory over Padraig Pearses in Woodmount on Sunday last. Clann were captained by Blaine Dunning who was unlucky not to find the pareses net early in the game. Clann were strong in defence with good displays by Fiachra Lennon, Aran Shine and Stephen Flynn.

U16 Division 3
Clann na nGael 5–11 Kilglass Gaels 5–9
The Clann na nGael under 16 team traveled to Kilglass on Tuesday evening last, and found themselves 4-1 to 1-1 down early on. But the lads produced a mighty come back to be level with their hosts at the break 3-8 to 5-2. The lads steadied the ship in the second half and ran out deserving winners of a pulsating game of football.

U15 Tournament
Clann na nGael were well represented on the successful Roscommon under 15 team during the week in Laois, with Martin Flannery, Cillian Bannon, Jack Connaughton, Cian McManus, Arran O'Reilly, David Connaughton, Shane Scally and Jamie Fahy all part of the set up. Roscommon beat Offaly in the final on Wednesday last in Johnstown, and Joey Connaughton was part of the management set up. Well done lads!

Division 4 Final
The Club would like to wish Roscommon the best of luck in the National Division 4 final on Saturday in Croke Park. Clann are represented by Jonathon Dunning, Donal Shine and Cathal Shine on the panel. Best of luck lads. This is an all-ticket event only and tickets will be available from Roscommon county board offices in Roscommon town and on www.gaa.ie.

Junior B Training
Junior B training will commence on Wednesday evening next at 8pm.

Date for your diary
Weekend of the 5th-7th August is planned for the Clann na nGael 75th Birthday celebration. Plans are currently underway to mark this special celebration for the club, and promises to be an exciting action-filled weekend - more on this over the coming weeks. So place this date in your diary, one not to be missed!

U16 Ladies
Clann na nGael under 16 ladies are through to the championship semi-final and will take on St Ciarans. It is expected that this match will take place this Thursday in Fuerty at 6.15pm.

U14 Ladies Féile
Clann na nGael under 14 girls took on neighbours St Brigids in the féile quarter final at home in Johnstown last Tuesday evening. This was the girls first match of the season and all players and subs contributed eagerly to the game in every corner of the pitch. The girls ran out with a comfortable win and are now through to the semi-final which will take place on Easter Monday 25th April, in Kiltoom versus Shannon Gaels at 4.15pm. Final to follow at 5pm. All supporters encouraged to come along!

U12 Ladies
The under 12 girls played two games in the championship. Their first game was a draw against Four Roads in Johnstown on 10th of April. Second game was 17th April against St Brigids in Kiltoom. The girls had found their form in this match and ran out comfortable winners. Next match is against St Barry's later this week. Date to be confirmed.

Gaelic for Mums/Beginners
Gaelic for mums/beginners continues on Wednesday night, at 8.30pm. New members welcome.

Cash for Clobber
Collection of clothes for the "Cash for Clobber" fundraiser continues. If you have any old clobber i.e clothes, sheets, towels, shoes etc, please place in a bag and drop to the clubhouse on Sunday morning or call 086-3305417 and we will arrange collection.

Club Lotto
Last weeks numbers were5, 21, 23, 28 and there was no winner of the jackpot. There were 2 match 3 winners each receiving €100. Next weeks jack pot will be €2,800 and the draw is in Monahans.

Easter Bingo in Drum this Good Friday night
Drum Bingo will host an Easter special in Drum Community Centre on Good Friday night at 8.30pm. Doors open at 8pm. Usual cash prizes to be won, plus 24 Easter Eggs to be given away on the night. Monster raffle also. Everybody welcome.

Drum Cemetery Voluntary Group

Clann na nGael Notes

All-Ireland Colleges Finals
Congratulations to Loretto from Tipperary on their great win in the All-Ireland Colleges Senior C final in Johnstown on Saturday last. Hard luck to St Louis, Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan. Congratulations also to Colaiste Íosagáin from Dublin on their great win in the All-Ireland Colleges Senior B final in Johnstown Saturday. Hard luck to Holy Rosary, Mountbellew. The club would like to thank all those who helped out on the day. On Saturday next, Johnstown will play host to a 3rd All Ireland final. This time its Ladies Secondary Junior C final between Presentation College, Athenry and St. Josephs, Navan. Throw in 11:45am.

U16 Ladies
The U16 ladies played Boyle in the quarter final of the championship on Wednesday night last in Johnstown. This was a very exciting game, with both sides playing attacking end to end football. Although Clann were well ahead in the second half, Boyle ladies did not give up and secured two late goals, keeping the Clann girls on their toes until the final whistle was blown. The semi-final is planned for Sunday 17th April but venue and opposition have yet to be decided.

Gaelic for Beginners/Mums
Gaelic continues on Wednesday nights. Come along, bring a freind and enjoy the fitness and fun. New members welcome.

Elphin Diocesan Substance Misuse Seminar

Elphin Diocese invites you to the launch of their Substance Misuse Initiative by Bishop Jones in the Shannon Key West Hotel, Roosky on Tuesday 12th at 7.30pm. This evening will be of great interest to individuals, parents, education and all communities who wish to hear how we can all help play a pivotal role in helping to prevent substance misuse in our families or communities. If you require any further information, do not hesitate to contact me

Why consider attending?
Alcohol and other drugs affect every village, town parish in Ireland. These affects an impact on individuals, families, schools and our parish communities. Our Initiative currently works with over 200 parishes nationwide in creating pastoral responses with other service providers to help in the primary and secondary prevention of substance misuse. We can all play our part, we are now launching in the North West Region.

Events happening in Parishes
  • Awareness & Information: We give all in attendance at the seminar a prevention pack that includes, posters, directory of services, books, information for parents/schools and information to use for parish and liturgies.
  • Education & Training: We facilitate the provision of substance use information/awareness nights for parents and communities. We provide a youth Peer 4 Peer Programme, Confirmation Healthy Life Choices programme that links in with the Sacrament of Confirmation (with new ideas on pledge). We also facilitate training for communities in the area of Suicide.
  • Alternative Activities to avoid substance misuse: We have worked with many parishes in creating alternative activities to substance misuse. These include youth café, youth clubs, No name Clubs, Alcohol free events etc
  • Community Mobilization to Support: We have over 100 parishes nationwide that have formed committees that look at the needs of their communities and have created responses that link with – prevention, evangelisation, building communities, reaching out to those affected and much more.

On the evening of the 12th April you will hear from the coordinator of the initiative, key speakers including the North West Regional Drug Task Force, parishes involved in our initiative, regional family support services and much more. We encourage clergy, parents, youth workers or those with an interest to attend and become aware of this very worthwhile initiative that is becoming available to all parishes in the Elphin Diocese. Tax Relief for Donations
Many thanks for the positive response to date. Reminder to return completed tax rebate forms to Drum Parish Office. Drum Cemetery Voluntary Group
Work in the cemetery has recommenced. Volunteers welcome to join in the work on Saturdays at 10am for the coming weeks.

Samaritans Church Gate Collection

Féile Ceoil na Scoileanna
The 46th annual Féile Ceoil na Scoileanna takes place in the Dean Crowe Theatre from Monday 11th April to Thursday 14th April, at 7pm daily. Matinee on Wednesday at 10.30am. Fáilte roimh cách. All welcome.

Clann na nGael 1-24 St. Joseph's 0-7
The Clann na nGael Kathleen Brennan Home Bakery junior A team kept their unbeaten run going with a facile win over St Josephs in Johnstown, on Saturday evening last. Clann took control of the game from the very start and an early spectacular goal from Ronan Gavin put Clann on their way to victory. Clann led by 1-11 to 0-2 at the break.
Clann were in total control in the second half, but Ronan O'Reilly was called into action a 2 occasions to keep the Clann goal intact. Clann ran out easy winners and now sit on top of the table.

Minor League
Clann na nGael 3–6 Castlerea 1–8
The Clann na nGael minor team entertained Castlerea in Johnstown on Sunday last in Johnstown. Castlerea were the first to settle and were 0-4 to 0-1 up early on, with Clanns point coming from Rudhrai McManus. A Willie Shine goal brought Clann level with the visitors, however parity was short lived as Castlerea hit 1-2 to knock Clann back on their feet. Emmet Kenny reduced the arrears with a point before Castlerea rallied with 2 more points, to go in at the break 1-8 to 1-2 up at half time.
Clann were a different prospect in the second half and 1-1 from Emmet Kenny put Clann within 2 points of the leaders with 10 minutes remaining. A Rudhrai McManus point brought Clann with in the bare minimum and their visitors and a second Emmet Kenny goal put Clann 2 points to the good with 4 minutes remaining. Further points from Darragh Petit and James Farrell sealed a well deserved victory for Clann. This team has a never say die attitude and with no shortage of skill, which in a very good mixture for a team.

Clann na nGael 0–10 St. Ronan's 0–0
The Clann na nGael under 16 team won their first game of the year with a victory over St Ronans on Friday evening last. The game was very late starting which was not fair on the Clann na nGael players or the referee.

U14 Féile
Clann na nGael 2–5 St. Ciarán's 3-11
Clann na nGael under 14's Féile Peil na nÓg campaign ended in disappointing fashion in Fuerty on Thursday evening last with a defeat to an impressive St. Ciarán's team. Playing with the wind in the first half Clann registered some good scores, but a five-minute spell before half time swung the game in St. Ciarán's favour, with the teams going into the break on level terms. Clann failed to find any rhythm in the second half and it was St. Ciarán's who ended the game the stronger. Clann will now look to make up for this result in both league and championship later in the year.

U16 Ladies
Clann na nGael 4-24 St. Brigid's 0-4
On Monday evening in Johnstown, Round 4 of the U16 Ladies Championship the Clann na nGael girls recorded a good win over St Brigids. Clann na nGael girls dominated the play from start to finish leading by 2-16 to 0-0 at the half time break. All the subs were introduced in the second half and the Clann girls came out well deserving winners with a final score 4-24 to 0-4. This was a great team performance with every player making a significant contribution on the pitch. The next game is on Friday April 1st at 8pm in Lisanmult, Roscommon against Roscommon Gaels.

U16 Ladies
Clann na nGael v Roscommon Gaels
The U16 ladies traveled to Lisnamult to play Roscommon Gaels in Round 5 of the U16 Ladies Championship on Friday night last. The girls battled the elements in high windy conditions and ran out comfortable winners in the end. They are now through to the quarter finals and fixtures have not been confirmed as yet.

Ladies Gaelic for Beginners/Mums
Gaelic for Mums/Beginners continues Wednesday nights at 8.30pm. Five new members joined last week, so bring a friend and come along, a great nights fitness and fun!

Underage Training
Under 10 and under 8 training has commenced on Sunday morning. Parents and players are reminded that the training time has changed to 10.15am.

Club Lotto
Last weeks numbers were 1, 8, 11, 14 and there was no winner of the jaclpot. There were 5 match 3 winners each receiving €40. Next weeks jackpot will be €2,400 and the draw will be in The Mill.
