Halloween Party in Athlone Springs Hotel

Athlone Springs Hotel are holding a Halloween party on Friday 30th October from 5-7pm in the hotel for all children in Clann na nGael GAA club. Fancy dress, games and lots of fun! Competition for best dress. This was a well supported party last year. The only request is that people ring the hotel and book the children into the party, as they need to know how many they will be catering for.

Clann na nGael Notes

International Rules
On Sunday last Clann na nGael hosted an international game at Johntsown for the first time in the club's history. Australia came with a big reputation but Ireland put them to the sword with a 79 to 8 win in the 'B' game. In the 'A' game scores were that little bit harder to get and Australia ran out 31 to 25 winners. This result sets up a great second test which will be played in St Ann’s club in Dublin. A great day was had by all in the clubhouse before, during and after the games.

The club would like to thank the Australian and Irish teams for their presentations on Sunday evening. The day wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for all the help received on the day. So thank you to all those who helped out on the day.

Under 21 Championship
Clann na nGael 1-5 Castlerea 0-6
The Clann na nGael u-21 team played their first game in the championship in a stormy Ballinlough on Saturday last. The game had been switched from Castlerea earlier in the day. This didn’t faze Clann as they raced into a 1-3 to 0-2 half time lead.
Clann had to dig deep in the second half as both Castlerea and the elements came on strong. Clann held on for a deserved win and now go on to play Padraig Pearses on Saturday
Team: Cathal Hannon, Eugene Petit, Colin Nicholson, Cathal Duignan, Cormac Harney, David Flynn, Kevin Naughton, Donal Shine, Graham Petit, Ross Naughton, Cathal Shine, Ronan Killian, Niall Lennon, Seanie Walsh, Neill Harney. Subs: James Keegan, Conor Jordan.

Saturday 31st October
U-21 Championship: Clann na nGael vs Padraig Pearses at 3pm in Johnstown

Also Robbie Ryan who came on the day to judge the art competition and Breege O’Connor who judged the handwriting competition.

Thanks to Athlone Gymnastics Club for organising training and making their facilities available to us.

Thanks to Clann na nGael for the use of the pitch, their trainers/coaches who looked after the teams and provided buses for travelling to matches.

To Bealnamulla Soccer Club who also provided coaching and buses for travel to matches.

Clann na nGael to host International Rules game

Whilst the International Rules series has been put on hold for 2009 the series at Masters level will continue over the coming two weekends when the Australian Wombats come visiting.

The series commenced in 2002 when a Dublin selection played the Australian visitors followed the following year by a visit to Australia by a group from Dublin. In 2004 the Australians visited Ireland and played two tests with Ireland winning both games. Ireland visited Australia in April 2006 and retained the trophy, with the Australians visiting us in October 2008 but being unable to wrest the trophy, which had been renamed after one of the stalwarts of the Masters game Paddy Gaffney, from our possession. The Australians had their first victory in the series in October 2008 when Ireland visited Australia but returned minus the trophy - a situation which we hope to rectify over the next couple of weeks.

The Australians first game here is on Friday 23rd October when they play an Irish Selection in a non test match at Kingspan Breifni Park, Cavan (7.30pm start).

The first in the two test series will take place at the splendid Clann na Gael at Johnstown outside Athlone on Sunday 25th October. A “B” game commences proceedings at 2.30pm followed by the "A" game at 4.30pm. The Clann na Gael club have put together a great programme to ensure that this will be a memorable occasion.

The second test will be held at St. Anne’s in Bohernabreena on Saturday 31st October. The home club of Dublin’s Joe and Alan McNally are planning a spectacular Halloween welcome for the Wombats. Proceedings get under way with a "B" game at 1.00pm followed by the "A" test at 3.00pm.

Clann na nGael Notes

Ladies U-14 Division 1A Championship Final
Clann na nGael 1-13 St Ciarans 1-0
The Thomas Nolan & Co. Taxation Consultants sponsored Clann na nGael U-14 girls were crowned County Champions on Saturday in Kiltoom. This is the second year in a row that Clann are U-14 kingpins but the performance last Saturday was a step above anything seen from this team before. From the throw-in Clann put constant pressure on the St Ciarans defence and didn’t relent this pressure for the whole of the first half. Kayleigh Dunning fired Clann ahead in the first minute with a point from play and this was quickly added to by a point from Hazel Menton. This was followed by a an excellent point from Rebecca Naughton on the run and on 11 minutes Saoirse McManus extended the lead to four points. Despite St Ciarans best endeavours they couldn’t penetrate a Clann rearguard where the fullback line of Aileen McEvilly, Ciara Costello and Aoibhin Golden were repelling all attacks. After 15 minutes Rebecca Naughton got her second score which was quickly followed by another point from Saoirse McManus. The last five minutes of the half belonged to Kayleigh Dunning as she split the posts on three occasions, two of these points coming from very tight angles. Ashley-Rose Coyle was on hand to score Clann’s penultimate point of the half to leave St Ciarans with an uphill battle.
But St Ciarans lifted their game just after the interval and pressure on the Clann defence resulted in the ball being fouled in the small square and a penalty being awarded. This was dispatched to the net and the lead was down to 7 points. Orla Ward in the Clann goal made a point blank save at this point before the Clann duo of Ciara Galvin and Orla O’Neill re-established their dominance in midfield and Kayleigh Dunning was on hand to avail of this with a point on 5 minutes. A good run from Kayleigh Dunning forced St Ciarans goalkeeper Honor Ennis into another great save but the rebound was eventually finished to the net by Kayleigh and the match was over as a contest. Clann had emptied their substitute’s bench by this stage and there was no change in the scoreboard for 15 minutes until Orla O’Neill scored a point following a run through the centre on 23 minutes. The same girl repeated the trick two minutes into injury time to round of the scoring. Clann’s defence as a unit were excellent while there were some great passing moves around the field resulting in some fine scores with Rebecca Naughton and Kayleigh Dunning the fulcrum of these attacks. Clann’s Captain Ciara Galvin accepted the Cup from County Board Chairperson Marie McAleer after the game. Congratulations to the management team of Terry O’Neill, Mickey Dunning and Aisling Egan whose hard work paid off on the day.
Team: Orla Ward, Aileen McEvilly, Ciara Costello, Aoibhin Golden, Aoibheann Curley, Marissa Murray, Sarah O’Sullivan, Orlagh O’Neill 0-2, Ciara Galvin, Ciara Quinn, Rebecca Naughton 0-2, Ashley-Rose Coyle 0-1, Saoirse McManus 0-2, Kayleigh Dunning 1-5, Hazel Menton 0-1. Subs: Ciara Connaughton, Shauna Bannon, Lola Omotosho, Ruth McManus, Kristy Warby, Lisa Dolan.

Clann na nGael Ladies Notes

U-14 Division 1 Championship Semi-Final
Clann na nGael Lions 6-8 St Brigids 1-8
The 'Thomas Nolan & Co, Taxation Consultants' sponsored Clann U-14 girls qualified for the county final on next Saturday 10th after a hard fought victory over near neighbours St Brigids in Kiltoom on Friday last. Despite the scoreline this match was in doubt until the last ten minutes when Clann pulled away from their opponents with a flurry of scores. Clann played against the wind in the first half and needed two goals from Saoirse McManus and Shauna Bannon to leave the sides level at the break. Some excellent points from Kayleigh Dunning and Orla O’Neill put Clann ahead before Ciara Quinn struck with a decisive 1-1 which gave Clann breathing space. St Brigids hit back with a goal of their own but Clann’s class shone true with further goals from Saoirse McManus, Ashley-Rose Coyle and Orlagh O’Neill. In order to retain the U-14 title Clann must defeat St Ciarans who already beat Clann in the Feile Final this year.
Team: Orla Ward, Sarah O’Sullivan, Ciara Costello, Aoibhin Golden, Aoibheann Curley, Marissa Murray, Aileen McEvilly, Orlagh O’Neill 1-2, Ciara Galvin 0-1, Ciara Quinn 1-1, Kayleigh Dunning 0-3, Ashley-Rose Coyle 1-0, Shauna Bannon 1-0, Saoirse McManus 2-1, Ruth McManus. Subs: Hazel Menton, Lola Omotosho, Kirsty Warby, Ciara Connaughton, Rebecca Naughton.

U-14 Division 3B Semi-Final
Best of luck to the Clann na nGael Cubs who play Shannon Gaels today Tuesday 6th October in their U-14 semi-final in Kilbride at 6pm. If they win the girls will face Kilglass Gaels in the final next Saturday.
There will be a total of five U-14 Ladies Finals taken place on Saturday and it's unfortunate they will be clashing with the U12 and Junior Finals but have been fixed for that date for a number of weeks, and can't be moved to Sunday as there is a round of minor matches on. Times and venues of these will not be confirmed until the last of the semi-finals are decided on Wednesday.

Minor Division 1 Championship
Clann na nGael Lions 2-10 St Brigids 0-6
Clann commenced the minor championship with victory over St Brigids in Johnstown on Sunday last. Early points from Michelle Harney-Nolan and Blana Gately put Clann ahead before an Aoife McManus point and a Blana Gately penalty left Clann leading 1-5 to 0-3 at the break. St Brigids closed the gap to three points within 15 minutes to go put they failed to score again as Michelle Harney-Nolan scored a goal and an Anna Shine point put 7 between the sides. A couple excellent scores from Blana Gately saw Clann safely home. The defence as a whole played excellently while the dual between St Brigids full forward Rebecca Joyce and Rosa Shine being one of the highlights of the game.
Team: Caroline O’Neill, Caoimhe McManus, Rosa Shine, Shauna Irwin, Katie Rock, Deirdre O’Neill, Clodagh Rock, Martina O’Brien, Gillian Wall, Ciava Dunning, Kimberley Finlass, Blana Gately 1-4, Katie Ward, Michelle Harney-Nolan 1-4, Aoife McManus 0-1. Subs: Anna Shine 0-1, Sorcha McManus, Ellen Harney, Aisling Lennon.

U-8 Blitz
An U-8 girls Blitz was held in Woodmount on Saturday morning last. Clann played matches against St Brigids, Four Roads and the host club in what was a very enjoyable experience. Congratulations to Padraig Pearses who ran the Blitz in a highly organised fashion along with supplying hot food to all the parents and players. Very much appreciated.

Clann na nGael Notes

Four County Finals
The coming weekend is going to be a very busy, and hopefully successful, weekend for the club. For starters we have the Under 12 final with the Clann lads taking on Padraig Pearses. This will be a tough encounter so we will need a large crowd down supporting them. Then it will be time to take the short journey to Fuerty where the Junior A team will take on local rivals St Brigid's. Paul and the lads will be expecting the same level of support as we had for the past few weeks. Then it will be time for the Junior B decider against Boyle. Hopefully you won't be too tired of standing up and stay around and shout on the lads. The Under 14 Girls also have a county final on Saturday against St Ciaran's. Time and venue have not been released at time of press. It would be nice to see a bit of colour around the area for the four teams on Saturday.
