Clann na nGael Notes

Senior Championship
Clann na nGael 1-18 Castlerea 2-8
Athlone Springs sponsored Clann na nGael senior team finished off the group stages of the senior championship with an emphatic victory over Castlerea to finish top of the group. Played in Johnstown in near perfect conditions it was the visitors who settled first when Nigel Dineen slotted over their first point. The same player followed up this with a well taken goal before Darren McDermot and Noel Curran kicked two more points. Clann were looking shaky in the early stages. Mark Shine settled them with a point however but Nigel Dineen fisted over for his second point to leave Clann trailing by six points again. Donie Shine pointed a free, Ronan Gavin fisted a great point and Cathal Shine fisted over another. Cathal kicked over another fine point before Jonathan Dunning reduced the gap to a single point with a fine point. Castlerea responded with a cracking goal by Noel Curran when he found space on the thirteen meter line. Alan Dunne kicked over a twenty meter free, before Cathal Shine received a long pass from Graham Pettit and levelled the game with a stunner of a goal. Castlerea replied with a point from Enda Kenny. Clann finished the first half the stronger though and points from Alan Dunne (2), Donie Shine, Enda Kenny and Matt Scally left the home side 1-12 to 2-5 ahead at the interval.
The second half started slower and Alan Dunne and Castlerea's Enda Kenny traded points. Jonathan Dunning and Ronan Curran traded two more points before Alan Dunne and Nigel Dineen traded two more points. Clann still led by four. Castlerea piled on the pressure but the Clann defence was not giving anything away. Jonathan Dunning and Alan Dunne kicked two more Clann points and Donie Shine finished off proceedings sending a long range free over the bar to leave the home support satisfied with a good weekend.
This rounded off a great weekend for the club with our first and second teams both straight into the quarter finals of their championships, the draw for which takes place on Sunday 2nd September at 6pm.

Clann na nGael Notes

Senior Championship
Clann na nGael 0-13 Elphin 0-11
Clann na nGael’s Athlone Springs sponsored senior team secured a well deserved win over Elphin in the senior championship on Sunday evening. Clann started in blistering form and were seven points to no score up before Elphin secured their first score on the twenty minute mark. Jonathan Dunning fisted the first point before Donie Shine slotted over a 45. Donie scored two more points from play either side of a good Enda Kenny point. Alan Dunne slotted over a free and followed up with another point from play. Elphin began to dig deep as Clann eased up a bit and they scored three points without reply, two from frees. Jonathan Dunning slotted over another point. Elphin finished the half the stronger with two good points to leave the half time score Clann 8 points, Elphin 5.
Jonathan Dunning started the scoring in the second half and Ronan Gavin followed up with a good point on the run. Elphin replied with two points to peg Clann back. Alan Dunne, Enda Kenny and Donie Shine stretched Clann’s lead to six points with three more points but Elphin were not going to give in easy. They scored four points from frees in the final ten minutes while Clann hit four wides. Clann backs were well on top, however and ran out winners on a scoreline of thirteen points to eleven. This sets up a top of the group clash with Castlerea in Johnstown at 4pm.
Clann na nGael team: Ronan O’Reilly; Niall McManus; Brian Goode; Darragh Egan; Ronan Gavin (0-1); Sean Walsh; Cathal Duignan; Donal Shine (0-4); Graham Pettit; Alan Dunne (0-3); Mark Shine; Matt Scally; Enda Kenny (0-2); Cathal Shine; Jonathan Dunning (0-3). Intermediate Championship
Clann na nGael 1-9 St. Dominic's 0-9
Clann na nGael’s Joe Brennan sponsored second team earned a hard-fought but important win in the Intermediate championship against St. Dominic's in Johnstown last Saturday evening. Clann started the brightest, and had two points on the board after three minutes - one from a free and the other from play, both from Darragh Lennon. St. Dominic's opened their account on ten minutes with a point from a free by Conor Fallon. Paul Dolan levelled the scoring and Conor Fallon slotted over two more frees to take the lead. Paul Dolan converted another free to leave St. Dominic's 5 points to 2 up as the half drew near an end. Ian Cooney slotted over a Clann free into injury time and Clann went in two points adrift. Second half and both teams exchanged points from frees to leave it 6 points to 4 for St. Dominic's and Conor Fallon extended their lead with a well taken point. Clann began to play better at this stage however and when Darragh Pettit made a great run down the left wing and passed inside to Derek Egan, he was taken out of it and the referee pointed to the spot for a penalty. Darragh Lennon converted and the sides were level, 1-4 to 0-7. St. Dominic's hit a 45 against the post and wing back, James Miley was quickest to react and fisted the ball over the bar. Clann levelled again with a Darragh Lennon free before David Henry, Ian Cooney and Darragh Lennon gave Clann the lead with three well-taken points from play. St. Dominic's responded with a point from Aidan Weir. Darragh Lennon restored the three point advantage with a converted free from out on the sideline. Clann ran out winners 1-9 to 0-9.

Clann na nGael Notes

Ladies Intermediate Championship
Clann na nGael 3-8 Kilbride 0-12
Clann na nGael Ladies played their second round of the Intermediate championship in wind and rain in Johnstown on Tuesday last against a strong and skilful Kilbride side. Clann played into the stiff breeze in the first half and Kilbride got the better start. Kilbride were three points up after 13 minutes when Michelle Harney-Nolan registered Clann’s first point. The scores were hard to come by however and despite hitting ten wides and dropping more shots into the Kilbride keeper, they failed to score for the remainder of the first half. They went in trailing Kilbride by six points to one at half time.
In the second half, Clann were more composed up front and Blána Gately scored the first point. Kilbride replied with a good point but Clann began to dig deep. Ruth Finlass and Aisling Lennon kicked over two points before Martina O’Brien levelled the game with a well taken goal on nine minutes. Kilbride were not going to go down easy however and four unanswered points restored their lead. Blána pointed a free and Kilbride replied with long range point. Four points between them and ten minutes remaining. Then Blána and Martina scored two goals to give Clann a two point lead. Blána and Ruth Finlass scored two more points and Kilbride came pushing for a goal. Kelly Killian rounded off the evening with a point with the last kick of the game. Final score Clann 3-8 Kilbride 0-12.
This was a great performance. Kilbride were a good team and will no doubt be there again at the closing stages of the championship. Clann now play Roscommon Gaels in the next round next Tuesday in Johnstown.
Clann team: Aisling O’Neill; Mary Shine; Aisling Egan; Sarah O’Sullivan; Niamh Fallon; Cathy Watson; Anna Shine; Ruth Finlass (0-2); Kim Finlass; Ciara Quinn; Martina O’Brien (2-0); Kelly Killian (0-1); Aisling Lennon (0-1); Michelle Harney-Nolan (0-1); Blána Gately (1-3).
