Sponsored Cycle for 75th Anniversary

On Friday evening last in the Athlone Springs Hotel, Clann na nGael and The Irish Motor Neurone Association launched a sponsored cycle from Croke Park to Johnstown to be held on Saturday 6th August. Plans were made to celebrate the club's 75th anniversary and it was decided that a cycle from Croke Park to Johnstown would be a fitting way to mark this occasion. As a committee we also thought that it would be good if we could help a worthy cause through our efforts and the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association was chosen as we noted its excellent work throughout the country. We hope to raise as much money as we can for IMNDA to aid their vital work in providing care to people suffering with Motor Neurone Disease and in raising awareness of the illness. We are also interested in getting as many volunteers as possible to help with the various aspects of the event and all efforts would be greatly appreciated. Sponsorship cards are available Alan Dunne and visit http://www.mycharity.ie/event/clannnagael/ to donate online.

Under 14
Clann na nGael under 14's continued their impressive form in the league on Thursday last with a win over St. Brigid's in Johnstown. Playing with a strong wind in the first half Clann registered some fine scores and built up a sizeable lead by half time. An early goal in the second half meant that Clann were able to hold off a comeback from St. Brigid's and cool heads in the latter stages meant that Clann ran out convincing winners. Many fine individual performances added to what was a great team effort.

Under 12
Clann na nGael under 12’s started their league campaign this year in early May. This was after playing a number of challenge games in preparation for the league. The club is fielding 3 teams in the league this year, in Divisons 1, 3 and 5 respectively as all leagues are 11 a-side. In Division 1 there have been matches against Castlerea, St. Bridgid's and Padraig Pearses. In Division 3 we have played St. Ciarán's, Western Gaels, Elphin and Michael Glavey's. In Division 5 we have had matches against St. Bridgid's and Padraig Pearses. So far the campaign in all Divisions has been successful and the players are showing good levels of skill and endeavour. Training continues every Wed evening in Johnstown at 7.00pm.

Clann na nGael Notes

Under 16 Ladies Championship
Clann an nGael 0-16 Strokestown 0-8
Congratulations to the U16 girls who took the Division 1A Title in the county championship on recently in Kiltoom. Clann girls took the match to Strokestown in the first minute of the game opening the scoreline with a fine point from captain Kayleigh Dunning and a well taken free after 5 minutes. Strokestown retaliated with a point after 5 minutes. The Clann girls Sarah O'Sulllivan, Lola Omotosha and Aoibhinn Golden were dogged in defence, holding back a strong Strokestown forward line. Excellent sweeping from Leanne Ward, Ciara Quinn and Kayleigh Allen in defence kept the Strokestown girls under control. Further points from Rebecca Naughton and Kayleigh Dunning in this half gave Clann a tally of 7 points at half time. Strokestown trailed with a tally of 4 points.
The Clann girls retained their hunger for victory in the second half, with the pairing of Orla O'Neill and Kayleigh Dunning dominating the midfield area, making it difficult for the opposition to get a hold on the game. Saoirse McManus opened the scoring in this half with a well taken point under pressure. The constant attack of Rebecca Naughton at centre-half forward, supported by a feisty Ashley Rose Coyle, Shauna Connell and Shauna Bannon put pressure on the Strokestown defence. Points came from all angles in this half. Therese Lennon, Shauna Connell and Orla O'Neill putting their names on the score sheet and Rebecca Naughton and Kayleigh Dunning adding to their tally. Strokestown were now struggling for options and a late attack saw them add three more points to the scoreboard. Orla Ward was diligent as ever in goal and made sure Strokestown did not rattle the onion bag! Clann were deserving winners on the day with a scoreline of 0-16 to 0-8.
Well done to the management team of Mickey Dunning and Terry O'Neill!
Team: Orla Ward, Kayleigh Allen, Sarah O'Sullivan, Aoibhinn Golden, Leanne Ward, Lola Omotosha, Ciara Quinn, Orla O'Neill (0-2), Kayleigh Dunning (0-6), Shauna Connell (0-1), Rebecca Naughton (0-5), Ashley Rose Coyle, Therese Lennon (0-1), Saoirse McManus (0-1), Shauna Bannon, Ciara Costello, Marissa Murray, Hazel Menton, Claire Murray, Lisa Dolan, Nicole Meehan, Ruth McManus, Grainne O'Neill, Renee Naughton, Valerie Oyiki, Caoimhe Lennon.

The under 14 girls were unlucky to lose out to St Ciarans in the Féile final on Monday last 25th April in Kiltoom. However things did not go their way in the final minutes of the final, and they went down by a point. Best of Luck to St Ciaran's in the Féile competition in Cork.
