St. Stephen's Day
Singles 8-5 Married 7-6
The singles team got back to winning ways with a hard fought win over a gutsy married team in Artic conditions in Johnstown. Goal were flying in at both ends with Niall McManus ending his goal scoring drought when he palmed the ball into the back of the net to give the singles a lead they never lost. Credit must go to Gerry Shine for a fine display of refereeing. After the game both sides retired to the club house for an evening of craic and ceol. The large crowd were entertained by Tommy Divine long into the evening. A total of €918.20 was raised on the day, and the money raised this year goes to Drum Cemetery Voluntary Group.

A Word of Gratitude

A Christmas Prayer
By Robert Louis Stevenson

Loving Father, Help us to remember the birth of Jesus.
that we may share in the song of the angels,
the gladness of the shepherds,
and worship of the wise men.

Close the door of hate and open the door of love all over the world.
Let kindness come with every gift and good desires with every greeting.
Deliver us from evil by the blessing which Christ brings,
and teach us to be merry with clever hearts.

May the Christmas morning make us happy to be thy children,
and Christmas evening bring us to our beds with grateful thoughts,
forgiving and forgiven, for Jesus' sake.
Amen.

Clann na nGael Notes

AGM
Clann na nGael Club AGM now scheduled for Sunday 19th of December @ 5pm in the clubhouse in Johnstown. All members requested to attend. New members welcome.

Scór na nÓg
Clann na nGael competed in three sections at the County Final of Scór na nÓg held at the Dean Crowe Theatre, Athlone on Sunday last, 12th December. Depsite the tremndous effort by all involved, there was to be no silver-wear for our members who competed in Solo Sining, Instrumental Group and Novelty Act.

We would like to thank Ciara Costello who took part in the solo singing, Melissa Moloney, Cian & Evan Cunniffe who made up the music group and equally so those involved in the Novelty Act - Niall Carr, Leah Maloney, Katie Rock and James Milton - all of who put in the hours over the last few weeks and we wouldn't have got there without them. Moreover, we need to thank the mentors and aids of these members: Emmet Durney and Teresa Milton who worked with the Novelty Act; Shane Cunniffe who helped out the music group and Brian Dolan for accompanying Ciara Costello in the Solo Singing. In addition, we should praise Tom O'Connor who taught some steps to the Clann na nGael Figure Dancing Team and to Sean Murray for coaching the Quiz Team who were both unfortunately beaten in the county semi final.
Sincere thanks to everyone who helped out in any way.

Club Lotto
Result from 12/12/2010 held in Connaughton's Bar:1, 2, 6, 11. No winner of €8600. 5 'match 3' winners each receive €40. Next week €8800 in Monahans Bar, Baylough

Roscommon Ladies Minor Division 1A Final
Strokestown 3-17 Clann na nGael 2-6
Clann were beaten in the Minor Division 1A Championship Final in Woodmount on Sunday as holders Strokestown retained the title. The scoreline didn’t reflect the tightness of the match for long periods, and scores were level with a little over 15 minutes remaining but the ‘Town side proceeded to score 1-11 without reply as they took advantage of the stiff breeze on their backs. Clann on their part played some lovely football for periods and lead 1-2 to no score after five minutes and when a Gillian Egan goal levelled matters in the second half, it looked like anyone’s game but that proved to be their final score.

Apart from a bitter breeze, conditions were perfect in Woodmount with the pitch in good order despite the arctic weather gripping the country. Clann got a tonic start when full-forward Niamh O’Brien dispatched a great goal, low into the bottom corner. Rebecca Naughton, Michelle Harney-Nolan, Martina O’Brien and Orla O’neill were winning throughout the first half and Clann added points from Aisling Lennon (2) Niamh O’Brien, Blana Gately, Gillian Egan and Orla O’Neill to trail at the break by a point. But thanks to some good saves from the Strokestown ‘keeper Clann didn’t hammer home their advantage with the breeze and they were to pay for this in the second period.

Strokestown started the second-half the brightest and soon were putting pressure on the Clann defence to go 3 points up. Clann wasted some good possession before Gillian Egan stepped inside her marker to drill a brilliant goal into the far corner from a tight angle. This score looked like it would spark Clann to further glory but within a minute Strokestown regained the lead with a point. At this stage of the match the Strokestown attack were pressurising the Clann defence in possession to good avail, as they tacked on several points before a speculative shot ended up in the back of the net to end any Clann hopes.

Overall Strokestown were the better team but Clann didn’t play up to their potential on the day, not recapturing the performance that beat Strokestown earlier in the competition but still added much to a high standard of football. Well done to the management team of Kevin Naughton, Mary Duffy, Kathleen Doran-Rourke and Niamh Fallon.
Clann na nGael: Katie Ward, Deirdre O’Neill, Rosa Shine, Ciava Dunning, Rebecca Naughton, Caroline O’Neill, Gillian Wall, Martina O’Brien, Orla O’Neill 0-1, Aisling Lennon 0-2, Blana Gately 0-1, Kayleigh Dunning, Michelle Harney-Nolan, Niamh O’Brien 1-1, Gillian Egan 1-1. Subs: Kim Finlass, Aoife McManus, Jennifer Duignan, Saoirse McManus, Ciara Quinn, Marissa Murray, Aoibhin Golden.

Keep Well & Warm

Please check on elderly neighbours to ensure that they are safe. If you have any concerns contact the Gardaí.

Cold weather can be a problem for anyone, especially older people, children, people with a disability and those with long-term illness. The Keep Well & Warm website brings together all the information and support available to householders who may experience difficulties keeping well and warm during winter.

Age Action suggests the following advice for older people during this cold weather:
  • Dress correctly by wearing multiple layers of thin clothing rather than one thick layer
  • Remain active and don't stay sitting for long periods
  • Spread your chores throughout the day to ensure to keep moving
  • Exercise daily but avoid ice
  • Eat well and have at least one hot meal a day. Sip hot drinks. Keep a flask of hot drink by the bed, in case you wake up cold
  • Stock up on provisions in case there is icy weather and you cannot go out
  • Seal gaps around windows and doors
  • If you have not already received the winter flu vaccination from your doctor, make an appointment to do so.
  • Remain in daily telephone contact with friends and relatives, and older people who are house-bound.

General Advice:
  • Listen to local radio. Check weather forecast.
  • Be careful when walking or driving on compacted snow — it may have turned to ice.
  • Wear good footwear to avoid slips
  • Check on vulnerable neighbours.

Minor Ladies Division 1A Semi-Finals
Clann na nGael 2-14 Western Gaels 1-9
Clann minor girls marched into the Division 1 Minor Final on Saturday last when they defeated Western Gaels in Kiltoom. Western Gaels had produced a late, late show three weeks ago to defeat Clann but this time Clann pulled away late in the match to secure victory. An Orla O'Neill goal in the first half left Clann leading 1-7 to 1-5 at the break and a early second half goal from Niamh O'Brien put them in the driving seat. Western Gaels came back at Clann and only for severe pressure from the Clann defence which forced several wides from the opposition, saved the day before late points from Gillian Egan, Blana Gatley and Orla O'Neill sealed the victory. Clann na nGael Notes

Ladies Notes
Hard Luck to the Nolan & Co., Taxation Consultants sponsored Clann U-14 girls who were defeated in the Division 1A Championship Final in Woodmount on Sunday by St. Brigid’s. In the end St. Brigids edged it by a single point 1-6 to 1-5 but Clann will rue several missed chances in a match they dominated in general play. Clann were first to score with a point from Ciara Quinn and this was followed by a point from Shauna Connell but St Brigids scored a fortunate goal that put them ahead. Then St. Brigid’s Sarah Kelly scored the first of her 4 first half points. Ciara Quinn scored a free for Clann after 18 minutes while Therese Lennon was unlucky to hit the crossbar with a fierce shot. Ruth McManus scored a excellent point towards the end of the first half to leave the scoreline 1-4 to 0-4 in favour of St. Brigid’s. Ciara Quinn added another free early in the second half but Clann were still kicking the wides. St Brigids added two further points but Ciara Quinn scored a cracking goal to leave the bare minimum between the sides with 5 minutes to go. But the equaliser never came. It was a disappointing end to what has been a great year for these girls, with some of the panel bagging National Schools, U-12 Division 1 and U-14 Division 3 and Feile titles. Thanks to all that helped out in particular Mickey Dunning and Terry O’Neill. Clann would like to wish St. Brigid’s Andrea McDermott a speedy recovery after receiving a unfortunate knee injury in the opening minute of the match.
Clann: Orla Ward, Renee Naughton, Leanne Ward, Aoibhinn Golden, Marissa Murray, Orlagh Shine, Damilola Omotosho, Shauna Connell 0-1, Ciara Quinn 1-3, Ruth McManus 0-1, Saoirse McManus, Therese Lennon, Shauna Bannon, Sarah O’Sullivan, Ashley Rose Coyle. Subs: Yvonne Curley, Hazel Menton, Ciara Costello, Lisa Dolan, Claire Murray, Nicole Meehan, Grainne O’Neill, Lauren McDonnell.

Minor Girls
The minor girls had their third win of the championship when defeating Strokestown away on Saturday on a scoreline of 4-9 to 0-8. Niamh O’ Brien 1-2, Blana Gately 2-3, Gillian Egan 1-2 and Kayleigh Dunning 0-1 were the Clann scorers but a solid defence and midfield gave Clann a great platform for victory along some great saves from Katie Ward in Goal. On Bank Holiday Monday Clann also defeated St Mary's, Tulsk in Johnstown 5-13 to 2-9. This has guaranteed them a semi-final spot. Scorers were Gillian Egan 3-2 Blana Gately 0-5 Michelle Harney-Nolan 1-2 Niamh O'Brien 1-1 Orla O'Neill0-2 Aisling Lennon 0-1. Next weekend Clann play Western Gaels away on Sunday in their final group match.

Clann na nGael Notes

Under 14 Girls - Division 3A
Clann na nGael Cubs 1-6 Kilmore 1-5
Congratulations to the Nolan & Co., Taxation Consultants sponsored Clann U-14 Cubs who won the Division 3A Championship Final in Tulsk on Saturday last against a gallant Kilmore side. Played in lovely weather conditions, Clann got off to good start and Claire Flannery struck a superb goal into the roof of the net after 4 minutes. This was followed by a well worked point by Sinead Farrell a minute later. Despite lots of possession Clann failed to add to their tally for ten minutes before corner forward Claire Flannery fired over the bar. Again this was followed immediately by a point from Sinead Farrell. At this stage Kilmore were starting to win more and more possession and had two points on the board from Aideen burke and Siobhan Hook, before Nicole Meehan pointed from 25 metres to leave Clann five points to the good at the break. Within 30 seconds of the restart Aoife Callaghan fly kicked over the bar to put Clann in a commanding lead but Kilmore however fought back and started to dominate in the possession stakes. They managed to reduce the arrears to four points before Nicole Meehan responded for Clann after 21 minutes. Kilmore replied with a point and wasted several opportunities before a great goal deep in injury time set up a climatic finish. However the referee signalled the full-time whistle on the kick-out much to the relief of the Clann support. Clann had some terrific performances in defence from Grainne O’Neill, Lauren McDonnell, Claire Murray, Shauna Connell was excellent throughout in midfield while Nicole Meehan, Claire Flannery and Sinead Farrell were the pick of the forwards.
Team: Carol Griffin, Grainne O’Neill, Renee Naughton, Lauren McDonnell, Anna O’Loughlin, Claire Murray, Ciara Connaughton, Leanne Ward, Shauna Connell, Valerie Oyiki, Nicole Meehan 0-2 (Capt), Caoimhe Lennon, Yvonne Harney, Sinead Farrell 0-2, Claire Flannery 1-1, Kursty Warby, Ethel McManus, Aoife Callinan 0-1, Niamh Quinn, Amy Quinn, Laoise Henry, Shauna Naughton, Sarah Ward, Emma Rock, Lucy Nally.

Under 14 Girls - Division 1A
The U-14 Division 1A Final will take place in Woodmount between Clann and St Brigids at 3pm next Sunday 24th October. St Brigids defeated Clann in the opening match in August 4-7 to 0-4 but two years ago in the U-12 Final Clann edged their neighbours by the bare minimum in a titanic battle after a replay. So the Club are looking for everyone to come out and support the girls on Sunday.

Minor Ladies
Clann na nGael 3-11 St. Brigids 3-9
The minor girls had their second win of the championship when defeating neighbours St. Brigids in Kiltoom on Friday night. Clann led 0-7 to 0-5 at the break but soon started to pull away with goals from Niamh O’Brien only for St. Brigids to come back. Michelle Harney-Nolan grabbed a late goal to secure the win. Next weekend Clann play Strokestown away on Saturday while on the Bank Holiday Monday they play St Mary’s in Johnstown.
Team: Katie Ward, Ciava Dunning, Rosa Shine, Caroline O’Neill, Deirdre O’Neill, Kim Finlass, Jennifer Duignan, Martina O’Brien, Orla O’Neill 0-2, Aisling Lennon 0-1, Blana Gately 0-3, Gillian Egan, Michelle Harney-Nolan 1-6, Niamh O’Brien 2-0, Aoife McManus. Subs: Saoirse McManus, Ciara Quinn.

Clann would like to thank all the clubs who competed in the tournament and Tormey Solicitors for once again sponsoring it.
The final of the U-10 tournament brought the curtain down on a very eventful season for the U-10s. Congratulations to the U-14 girls teams, sponsored by Nolan & Co. Taxation Consultants, who both qualified for the county finals. The Lions qualified for the Division 1A Final by virtue of a good win over St Ciarans 3-9 to 0-7 on Sunday in Johnstown. Second half goals by Ciara Quinn (2) and Shauna Bannon got Clann into the final where they meet neighbours St. Brigids once again. The Final will probably be played Sunday 24th October.
The U-14 Cubs also had a narrow win in a pulsating Division 3A semi-final against Four Roads played under lights in Johnstown on Monday. Clann lead by 8 points at the break 2-5 to 0-3 but Four Roads soon reduced the lead to a solitary point before Caoimhe Lennon and a great goal from Shauna Connell put Clann 5 points up with a couple of minutes to play. Four Roads struck back with a free and then a brilliant individual goal but the final whistle sounded soon afterwards for a great win for Clann. They will meet Kilmore in the final this weekend coming. Final score 3-6 to 2-8.

Gaelic 4 Mothers/Beginners continues on Wednesdays at 8.30pm. Girls U-14 Championship

Hard luck to Orla O’Neill and Kayleigh Dunning who were part of the Roscommon team who lost out to Waterford in the All-Ireland Semi-Final on Saturday in Portarlington. Both girls got on the scoresheet and are under-age for the team again next year.

Roscommon Ladies Intermediate Championship
Clann na nGael 3-11 Michael Glaveys 3-9
Clann secured a semi-final place in the championship with round of matches left to play with a hard fought victory over Michael Glaveys in Johnstown on Sunday. Clann started well with two frees from Blana Gately before wing forward Ciara Fallon scored a point after being set up by Rebecca Naughton. When Michelle Harney-Nolan hit the woodwork Blana Gately was following up to volley home from close range. Glaveys hit with three unanswered points before Maz Sweeney pointed before Rebecca Naughton increased Clann’s lead with a point from an impossible angle. Ciara Fallon then intercepted a kick-out to return the ball over the crossbar and then Blana Gately struck for her second goal with a shot into the roof of the net from 15 metres. The same player followed up with a good point from play before Glaveys scored a goal from a penalty. Clann led 2-8 to 1-4 at the break but Glaveys came out in the second half and with the aid of the breeze took the game to Clann. A superb goal and three unanswered points left a point between the sides before Clann rallied and a Maz Sweeney point was followed by a goal from Clann. A quickly taken free from Blana Gately to Ruth Finlass was passed inside to the awaiting Niamh O’Brien who dispatched the ball low into the bottow corner. Substitute Kayleigh Dunning tagged on another point to leave six points between the sides and seemed to end the game as a contest. But Glaveys had other ideas and another well taken goal was followed by a point to leave it a nail biting finish but Clann prevailed. Clann had good performances all over with Kelly Killian, Ciara Fallon, Rebecca Naughton, Blana Gately particularly catching the eye.
Team: Eileen Goode, Michelle Keegan, Martina O’Brien, Mary Shine, Kelly Killian, Niamh Fallon, Rosa Shine, Gillian Wall, Ruth Finlass, Ciara Fallon 0-2, Michelle Harney-Nolan , Blana Gately 2-4, Rebecca Naughton 0-1, Maz Sweeney 0-3, Tracey Keegan. Subs: Kayleigh Dunning 0-1, Kim Finlass, Niamh O’Brien 1-0.
