O'Gara Cup
Clann na nGael 3-10 Creggs 2-06
The Athlone Springs sponsored senior team defeated Creggs on Sunday in Creggs. Clann were first to score with a Matt Scally point from play before Creggs replied with two pointed frees. Enda Kenny then placed Ross Naughton for a goal, which he finished to the roof of the net. Two frees from Donal Shine left Clann leading at half-time 1-3 to 0-4, though Clann had Darren Lennon to thank for an excellent save midway through the first half. A ten minute scoring spree early in the second half when Clann accounted for 1-5, appeared to wrap up the game, the goal coming from Enda Kenny after a great catch and lay-off from David Lennon. Points from Donal Shine, Jonathon Dunning and Enda Kenny gave Clann a ten point cushion before Creggs replied with a penalty. Matt Scally got another goal for Clann before a late goal from Creggs left seven points between the teams at the full-time whistle. Clann were well served by Ollie Harney, Kenneth Dowling and Niall McManus at the back and up front it was a day that all the forwards made telling contributions.
Team: Darren Lennon, Denis Gavin, Ollie Harney, Kenneth Dowling, Niall McManus, David Flynn, Niall Shine, Gary Shine, Emmet Rock, David Lennon, Matt Scally (1-2), Donal Shine (0-4), Ross Naughton (1-0), Jonathon Dunning (0-2), Enda Kenny (1-2). Subs, Ronan Gavin, Mark Shine, Niall Kennedy, Mark Killian, Sean Walshe.

Mid-South Division 4 League
Clann na nGael 1-09 Creggs 1-11
The Samz Tavern sponsored Junior B Team narrowly lost out to Creggs last Friday evening. Two early points from James Keegan gave Clann the lead but Creggs replied with three scores in a row and they held a 0-6 to 0-5 lead at half-time. Creggs were first to score on the resumption before two points from Clann wing back Donal Beirne reduced their margin to the bare minimum. Creggs increased their lead with a goal and a point before Keith O'Neill struck for a Clann goal and a point from the impressive Niall Lennon left it a one point game. Try as they might Clann couldn't get the equaliser and Creggs rounded off the scoring with another point.
Team: Ray Griffin, Emmet O'Connor, Paul Whyte, Cormac Harney, Donal Beirne (0-2), Kevin Conneely, Morgan Keena (0-1), Colin Nicholson, Michael Haugh, Graham Petit, Mark Whyte (0-1), Niall Lennon (0-1), Kevin Kenny, James Keegan (0-3), Keith O'Neill (1-0). Gaelic4Girls Final

Gaelic4Girls comes to a close in Monksland
Cushla Park, Monksland was the venue for the Gaelic4Girls blitz on Tuesday night last. Approximately 35 girls who had participated in the 6 week programme took part in fun conditioned games in front of their families and members of Connacht Council. Each girl received a tee-shirt and certificate to mark their attendance. The girls will now travel to Croke Park for a National Blitz on July 13th . It is hoped that all the girls will continue to play Ladies Gaelic Football with clubs in the area. Sincere thanks to Monksland Community Centre and Nancy Goode for her support during this programme and to all the coaches for their commitment in the past number of weeks. The Programme was generously supported by Roscommon Sports Partnership and the Ladies Gaelic Football Association and targeted girls who hadn't previously played gaelic football.
The last photo of the girls includes Clann na nGael coaches and Representatives from the Roscommon and Connacht Boards in the back row; Kevin Naughton (Clann na nGael), Ita Hannon (Secretary of Connacht Ladies Gaelic Football), Peter Shine (Clann na nGael), Geraldine Carey (Treasurer of Roscommon Ladies Gaelic Football), Caroline Geraghty (Clann na nGael), Tracey Keegan (Clann na nGael).

U-16 Championship Final
Clann na nGael 1-04 Padraig Pearses 1-09
Clann U-16's lost the County Final to Pearses on Sunday in Hyde Park . Pearses started strongly and soon had 3 points on the scoreboard before Clann's first score from an Emmett Kenny free. Pearses increased their lead with another 2 points before Emmett Kenny got another great free. But then on 20 minutes Pearses struck for a goal and Clann looked in trouble but a massive long range from Daniel Qualter gave them hope at half-time as Pearses lead 1-5 to 0-3. And in the second Clann eventually got the upper hand in midfield and started to reduce the Pearses lead. A Daniel Qualter point from play followed by a goal from Cian Duffy left the scores at 1-7 to 1-4 for over 10 minutes but Clann missed a lot scoring opportunities and Pearses weathered the storm with some resolute defending and proceeded to score 2 points in the last couple minutes to leave 5 points between the teams. Great credit goes to the management team of PJ Glynn, Gerry O'Connor, Liam Connaughton and Fergal Shine for all their hard work and for all the players who kept fighting to the end and never gave up.
Team: Stephen Shine, Keelan O'Neill, Darragh Egan, Cian O'Reilly, David Harrington, Michael McManus, Gearoid Lennon, John Harney, Daniel Qualter (0-2), Emmett Kenny (0-2), Dermot Higgins, Cian Duffy (1-0), Philip Lennon, Darragh Glynn, Dan O'Connor. Subs, Andy Harrington, Enda McManus, Willie Shine, John Finnerty, James Farrell, Fiachra Lennon.

O'Gara Cup
Clann na nGael (1) 0-13 Shannon Gaels 0-09
The senior team travelled to Croghan on Saturday evening and came away with a good win against Shannon Gaels. Clann opened the scoring with a free from Enda Kenny and further points from Emmett Rock, Matt Scally and Niall Shine left them leading at half-time 0-6 to 0-3. A good point from play from Enda Kenny early the 2nd half was followed by 3 good frees from the same player in the 2nd half. The midfield of Niall McManus and Gary Shine decided to get the act and contributed 3 between the pair. Although Clann never looked like losing this game Shannon Gaels never stopped taking the game to Clann and made it an uneasy final 10 minutes with some fine scores. Clann had some good performances from Mark Killian, Gary Shine, Enda Kenny,Emmett Rock and Ross Nuaghton.
Team: Darren Lennon, Niall Kennedy, Ollie Harney, Ray Fallon, Niall Shine (0-1), David Flynn, Mark Killian, Gary Shine (0-2), Niall McManus (0-1), David Lennon, Conor Duignan, Emmet Rock (0-1), Ross Naughton, Enda Kenny (0-6), Matt Scally (0-2). Subs Paul Bruce, David O'Neill, John Paul Dunning.

Mid South Division 4 League
Clann na nGael 0-10 Padraig Pearses 0-12
An under strength Clann Junior B team lost narrowly to Pearses on Friday evening in Woodmount. Uncertainty about the timing of the game left Clann waiting around for nearly 40 minutes before the match started and they went in at half-time trailing by 0-7 to 0-4. A great comeback in the second-half tied up the scores and Clann had their chances to win the game but ultimately Pearses prevailed. Fergal Shine was to the fore in the scoring stakes with 6 points and there were also good performances from Paul Curley, Niall Lennon and Keith O'Neill.
Team: Joe Fallon, Mark Shine, Paul Curley, Fintan Kenny, Morgan Keena, Paul Murray, Padraig Kelly, Michael Haugh, Graham Petit, Niall Lennon, Robert Connaughton, Alan Shine (0-2), Keith O'Neill (0-2), Fergal Shine (0-6) Ray Griffin. Subs James Keegan, Padraig Seery, Mark Duignan.

Pentecost Pastoral Letter 2008

Bishop to Encourage Deacons and Parish Catechists through Pentecost Letter

The introduction of deacons and parish catechists is to receive significant encouragement next weekend when a pastoral letter from Bishop Jones circulates throughout the thirty-eight parishes of the Elphin diocese.

In his second Pentecost letter Bishop Jones notes the huge evolution of the Irish Church in recent years. “If one were to list all the persons in our diocese who contribute to Church activities, the list would contain several thousand names” he said. “This is a great sign of the vitality of our diocese”.

He also praises the ongoing contribution of priests and religious, including retired priests and sisters, and thanks them for their support of families through their contributions to education, community development, the evolution of social services and many other developments.

The bishop goes on to comment upon contemporary challenges facing parishioners and parishes. “As baptised people with the Spirit of God at work in us we face the challenges that confront us with confidence and enthusiasm” he writes. “The work of transforming family and community life through the Gospel is ours.”

“Certain challenges however need more than goodwill. They call for systematic planning and investment in persons and by persons who will exercise a service of leadership, support and encouragement. In light of this and following consultation with priests and our Diocesan Pastoral Council I propose to reintroduce the permanent diaconate and to invite parishes to encourage women and men to train as parish catechists.”
Last year a decision was taken by the Irish bishops to reintroduce the permanent diaconate. The Catholic Church has always taught that there are three degrees within the Sacrament of Holy Orders: bishops, priests and deacons, but in recent centuries, the Order of Deacon, tended to be seen as a step towards becoming a priest.

This outcome was revisited in the 1960s during Vatican II and a decision taken to restore the diaconate as a distinct ministry.

Today there are in excess of 15,000 deacons in the Roman Catholic church, including Britain, mainland Europe and the USA. These men, many of whom hold down jobs to support their families have three areas of responsibility: the liturgy, the service of the Gospel and works of charity.

In terms of the liturgy deacons are involved in helping people prepare to receive all the sacraments. They can also officiate at baptisms, bless marriages, preside at funerals and lead prayer services.

In terms of serving the Gospel they are expected to read and pray with Sacred Scripture every day and to commit themselves to on-going study, particularly by way of becoming skilled preachers.

Deacons are also expected to be devoted to works of charity and to the functions of administration that accompany the on-going work of the Church.

“The ministry of deacons will compliment and not replace the many services exercised by lay people” states Bishop Jones.

He also notes the restriction of the permanent diaconate to men as “a source of disappointment to some women and men”. He continues “I hope however that we will recognise the potential the permanent diaconate represents”.

Bishop Jones is also of the view that tomorrow’s parishes will have need of qualified catechists. Parishes, he suggests, need to compliment the efforts of families and Catholic schools in bringing young people to a sustaining faith and to support adults deepen their faith.

“We have much to benefit from having suitably trained persons. Such persons, known abroad as Parish Catechists, frequently contribute by organising and facilitating short programmes that fan the flame of faith that burns in each of us”.

He also believes that parish catechists will contribute very positively to developing a sense of Christian community within parishes.

Mid South Division 4 League
Clann na nGael 0-12 St Brigids 0-10
Clann defeated St Brigids in a tough encounter in Johnstown on Friday evening last. This was a close contest all through, with Clann just shading it at the interval by a point on a score line of 0-6 to 0-5 with points from Enda Kenny, Keith O'Neill and Niall Lennon. Enda Kenny continued in his rich vain of form with three more frees in second half with the winning scores coming from Niall Lennon and Paul Murray. There were some fine performances from Niall Kennedy, Cormac Harney and Keith Kildea at the back, Kevin Conneely when introduced and Graham Petit showed very well as a target man at full forward.
Team: Ray Griffin, Keith Kildea, Niall Kennedy, Shane Gavin, Cormac Harney, Emmet O'Connor, Morgan Keena, Michael Haugh, Colin Nicholson, Conor Duignan, Enda Kenny (0-6), Niall Lennon (0-3), Keith O'Neill (0-2), Graham Petit, Sean Walsh. Subs Paul Whyte, Kevin Conneely, Paul Murray (0-1), Fintan Kenny.

Ladies U-14 Championship Semi-Final
Clann na nGael 2-08 St Brigids 1-03
Clann qualified for the county final after a hard fought win over neighbours St Brigid played under a hot midday sun on the bank holiday Monday. St Brigids started well and soon lead by a goal to a point but by the 15th minute Clann had equalised with points from Kayleigh Dunning and Rebecca Naughton. Jennifer Duignan put Clann in the lead before an Orla O'Neill goal left Clann leading by 4 points at the break. Karen Nicholson and Rebecca scored further points but Brigids kept plugging away and reduced the lead to 3 points with 3 frees but Ciara Galvin and the Clann defence as a whole were giving little away. A Karen Nicholson free and another Rebecca Naughton point gave Clann the breathing space of a 5 point lead before Kayleigh Dunning fired home a late goal to finish the game as a contest. For the second year in a row Clann will face St Marys in the U-14 final, with Clann looking for revenge after losing narrowly in a replay last year.
Team: Leanne O'Connor, Deirdre Ward, Ciara Galvin, Ciara Costelloe, Katie Rock, Gillian Wall, Louise Curley, Rebecca Naughton (0-3), Orla O'Neill (1-0), Anna Shine, Kayleigh Dunning (1-2), Grace Naughton, Karen Nicholson (0-2), Jennifer Duignan (0-1), Gemma Nicholson. Subs Saoirse McManus, Melissa Glynn, Hazel Menton, Aoibhin Golden and Kirsty Warby.

Congratulations to the Clann girls and mentors involved in the Roscommon U-14 squad who won the Connacht B championship on Saturday evening in Claremorris against Mayo.

Minor League
Clann na nGael 0-12 Padraig Pearses 0-12
Clann minors earned a good draw with Pearses in Woodmount on Monday. Pearses got off to a good start and soon lead by 5 points to 1 mainly through the excellent free taking of Aaron Feehily who landed 6 frees in total. Darragh Lennon was equally adept at free taking and pulled two back for Clann along with a Conor Warde point from play to leave the scores at 0-6 to 0-4 in favour of Pearses. Clann started the second half with the breeze on their backs and 2 points from Darragh Lennon restored parity. From that to the end it was tit for tat with Darragh Lennon showing the way when moved into full forward and scoring 4 further points from play. Another point from Donal Beirne put Clann into the lead near the end but Pearses equalised. Cathal Shine who was instrumental in Clann's comeback, when moved to midfield, had to leave the game after a late tackle left him injured. Clann rested some of their U-16 players who are involved in the final next Sunday against the same opposition. Incidentally both clubs play each other at 4 different grades this week.
Team: Thomas Keogh, Keith Kildea, Cathal Duignan, Cathal Hannon, Niall O'Connor, Cormac Harney, Andy McNamara, Kevin Naughton, Owen Connaughton, Donal Beirne (0-1), Daragh Lennon (0-9, 4frees), Cathal Cunniffe, Martin Lennon, Cathal Shine (0-1), Conor Warde (0-1). Subs Robert Egan, Conor Duignan and Francis McManus.
