Clann na nGael Notes

Club Race Night
There are still a few horses and races to sponsor for the Clann race night in the Athlone Springs on Friday 9th October. It is sure to be a great night, so to have an interest in the night put your hand in your pocket and support the club. Contact any member of the committee.

Junior A Championship
Clann na nGael 0-7 Ballinameen 0-7
The Clann na nGael 'Kathleen Brennan Home Bakery' junior team drew with Ballinameen on Saturday evening last in a well appointed Fuerty. Clann were slow out the blocks and were 0-3 to 0-2 down at the break. Clann scores came from Alan Dunne and Ronan Killian.
Clann came out all guns firing at the restart, and a brace of points from Seanie Walsh put Clann's noses in front for the first time in the game. Ronan Killian put Clann further in front. But Ballinameen leveled matters once again with two quick points.
A Neill Harney point was sandwiched between two Ballinameen points. As it looked like Ballinameen were heading into the final, Alan Dunne stepped up with an equalizing point. A draw was a fair result and the replay is sure to be a cracker.
Team and scorers: Cathal Hannon, Derek Egan, Kevin Naughton, Keith Kildea, Cormac Harney, Eugene Petit, Ronan Gavin, Andy Carbery, Emmet Rock, David Lennon, Alan Dunne 0-2, Seanie Walsh 0-2, Niall Lennon, Graham Petit, Ronan Killian 0-2. Clann na nGael 2-9 St Brigid's 1-4
The Clann na nGael u-12 team advanced to the county final with a win over neighbours St Brigid's on Sunday. The Clann lads gave a gutsy display mixed with some great pieces of skill. Clann were 1-4 to 0-1 at the break.

Ladies All-Ireland U-14 Sevens Tournament
Commisserations to the U-14 girls who were defeated in the National Sevens Plate Final on Saturday. They played 7 matches in total winning 4 matches, each match lasting 20 minutes. Kilmoremoy of Mayo defeated Clann in the Plate Final, a game where Clann were unlucky and could have won after a host of missed chances. Ballyboden-Kilmacoo were the overall tournament winners. Clann U-14s Lions now have a Division 1A semi-final against St Brigids to look forward to next Sunday while the Clann Cubs face either Kilglass Gaels or Shannon Gaels this weekend in the Division 3B semi-final.

Abbey Hotel Ladies Intermediate Shield Final
Clann na nGael 3-12 Michael Glaveys 1-9
Clann defeated Michael Glaveys in the Shield Final last Friday evening in Johnstown. Played in perfect conditions Clann were rocked by an early penalty which Glaveys converted. But goals from Maz Sweeney and Blana Gately put Clann in a commanding position at the break leading 2-8 to 1-3. Glaveys came more into the match on the resumption but the Clann defence as a whole were resolute and played very much as unit forcing the Glaveys forwards to shoot under pressure. A second goal from Maz Sweeney gave Clann the breathing space required. On the night the girls played some good football and worked hard to end the year on a high note. Midfielder Ruth Finlass received the Player of the Match award with captain Niamh Fallon receiving the Shield.
Team: Eileen Goode, Deirdre O'Neill, Rosa Shine, Shauna Irwin, Aisling Curley, Kelly Killian, Aine Seery, Martina O'Brien, Ruth Finlass 0-3, Michelle Harney-Nolan 0-2, Niamh Fallon, Blana Gately 1-3, Maz Sweeney 2-2, Niamh O'Brien 0-1, Ciara Fallon 0-1.

This was sandwiched by points from Tracey Keegan and Ciava Dunning and then Aoife McManus fired over three quick points in row to push Clann further ahead, leaving the half-time score 1-9 to 1-1. A second Clann goal from Martina O'Brien seemed to put Clann out of sight only for Kilbride to score two quick goals to reduce the lead to 5 points. A goal after a powerful run through the middle by substitute Ruth Finlass lifted Clann again and futher points from Kathleen Doran-Rourke, Aoife McManus and Ruth Finlass gave Clann a eleven point winning margin.

U-14 Division 1 Championship
Clann na nGael Lions 3-13 Padraig Pearses 2-5
Clann completed their final group match with victory over Padraig Pearses in Johnstown on Sunday evening and in doing so topped the group. The game was slow to take off with Clann only having four points to show after 25 minutes, two each from Shauna Bannon and Ashley- Rose Coyle. Then Rebecca Naughton scored points before Kirsty Warby scored a good goal to leave Clann leading 1-6 to 1-2 at the break. Kirsty got a touch on a long ball into the goalmouth to find the net once more in the first minute of the second half. Pearses full forward Danielle Kenny got her second goal to reduce the lead once more on ten minutes and Orla Ward in the Clann goal had to be alert to deflect a powerfully struck free over the bar from the same girl. Points from Ciara Quinn, Shauna Bannon, Ashley-Rose Coyle, Orlagh O’Neill and Saoirse McManus put Clann in the driving seat and on 22 minutes full forward Kirsty Warby scrambled her third goal to end the game as a contest. Clann had some good performances, with Ruth McManus, Ciara Costelloe, Aoibheann Curley and Ciara Quinn solid at the back, midfielders Ciara Galvin and Orlagh O’Neill showing a lot of enterprise and the half-forward line of Shauna Bannon, Rebecca Naughton and Ashley-Rose Coyle the pick of the forwards. They will now play their semi-final in two weeks. Best of the luck to the girls as they compete in the U-14 sevens in Dublin at the weekend.
Team: Orla Ward, Sarah O’Sullivan, Ciara Costello, Ruth McManus, Aoibheann Curley, Damilola Omotosho, Ciara Quinn 0-1, Ciara Galvin, Orlagh O’Neill 0-1, Shauna Bannon 0-4, Rebecca Naughton 0-2, Ashley-Rose Coyle 0-3, Saoirse McManus 0-1, Kirsty Warby 3-0, Hazel Menton, Ciara Connaughton, Kayleigh Dunning.

Garda Community Safety Week

In light of a number of robberies in the area in recent times, please find below details of Garda Community Safety Week, which runs from 21st to 27th September 2009.

Please note that Roscommon Garda Station is the station that covers most of the parish of Drum, and the phone number is 090-6638300. A Garda drop-in centre is available in Monksland Community Centre every Tuesday evening from 7-9pm.

A Community Alert Area programme has been operating in the parish for many years and we would ask people to be on alert for strange or suspicious activity in the area and please report any concerns to the Gardaí. More information about the Community Alert programme can be found on the Garda website or the Muintir na Tíre website.

The following is a press release from An Garda Síochána website.
Garda Community Safety Week - 21st to 27th September 2009

The Garda Commissioner, Mr Fachtna Murphy, has designated this week as Garda Community Safety Week.

For An Garda Síochána, the delivery of concerted organisational Community Safety initiatives will bring palpable strategic benefits in Crime Reduction, Public re-assurance and confidence in our service. This Garda Community Safety Week Campaign also supports key Strategic Goals, contained in the Garda Síochána Corporate Strategy Plan 2007 - 2009.

The primary objective of this Garda Community Safety Week will be to remind and impress upon the wider public, the importance of being aware of how simple and yet effective, crime prevention can be in reducing the incidents of crime.

The main focus of the week will be in the following areas: Burglary, Theft from cars, Theft from shops and Bicycle theft.

The theme of the week is ‘Older People in the Community’

The purpose of the theme is to focus on the positive contribution of older people in society and in particular through their involvement in the various community partnerships and crime prevention initiatives operated in partnership with An Garda Síochána. While at the same time recognising that older people can be targeted by certain types of criminals however the impact of this can be reduced if crime prevention advice is taken on board.

This Campaign will be supported and reinforced by a number of activities throughout Ireland during this week, including:

# A Garda ‘Information Point’ Stand at the National Ploughing Championships at Athy, Co. Kildare from 23rd – 25th September.

# A number of strategic nationwide ‘High Visibility’ Policing initiatives involving the Garda Traffic Units, Garda Mounted Unit, Crime Prevention Officers and the new Garda Mobile Incident Command Units.

# The hosting of initiatives, to foster and sustain positive Garda / Community partnerships with various groups in society, including School Children, Intercultural groups and Older Persons.

# The hosting of a number of local radio broadcasts comprising a Garda Management on Crime Prevention and Community Safety advice.

# The hosting of Community Alert and Neighbourhood Watch meetings during Community Safety Week

# Circulation of Crime Prevention and Community Safety Advice Leaflets to the public in several forums, including Public Libraries and the Garda Website.

This initiative is being co-ordinated by the Garda Community Relations & Community Policing Division, Harcourt Square, Dublin 2. Further information will be available from the Garda Website at www.garda.ie

Junior B Team
The Clann Junior B team are playing St Dominic's in the mid-south semi final on Saturday evening at 5.30pm in Fuerty. A large crowd is expected to come along and support both teams Saturday evening

Tormey Solicitors League
A large crowd gathered in Johnstown last Thursday night to witness a very exciting contest between Clann na nGael and Mountbellew in the Tormeys Solicitors under 10 'A' final. The final comprised of two matches between the clubs, with the combined score deciding the winner. Each club won a match, with Mountbellew just shading it on the aggregate score. It was a hugely enjoyable event, with parents and supporters from each club encouraging the admirable efforts from all the players. The range of skills on display was very impressive, with some wonderful point scoring for such young players. The idea behind the league is to encourage maximum participation with every player getting game time. Mountbellew had a squad of 22 players, with 28 representing Clann na nGael.
The normal GAA rules were slightly amended for this league. The GAA's "GO GAMES" concept was incorporated into the rules, which meant that the league fixtures involved small sided games, 2 points being awarded for an over the bar score and players restricted to two plays before they must release the ball. Great credit is due to all 50 players, who all showed a level of determination that will certainly stand to them in their future football careers. Clann na nGael's two captains for the day were Conor Costello and Eoghan Fallon.
In the Tormeys Solicitors league under 10 'C' Final held in Johnstown last Wednesday night, Padraig Pearses edged out Ballinasloe in another very exciting encounter in Johnstown. The 'B' final between Athlone and Caltra will take place shortly, with a further thrilling encounter anticipated.
Clann na nGael squad: Michael Hanley, Micheál Griffin, Liam Donnelly, Conor Costello, Eoghan Fallon, Shane Macken, Dylan Maloney, Oisín Rock, Aaron Wall, Jack McManus, Séa Henry, Paul McManus, Thomas Bannon, Ruairí Lenehan, Coman Lennon, Michael McManus, Anthony Kelly, Jason Conway, Rory Forde, David Fortune, Neil Macken, Conor Farrell, Sean Ryan, Michael McManus, Sean Seery, Oisín Lennon, Adam Harney, Calum O'Brien.

St Dominic's Tournament
Clann na nGael were delighted to take up their annual invitation to the Knockcroghery Fair under 10 tournament, which took place in St Dominic's on Saturday the 19th September. After two great games against Kilbride and St Ciarans, captain for the day David Fortune lifted the Killian Cup for Clann. It was, once again, an excellently run event and great tribute is due to Gabriel Martin and everyone at St Dominics for their efforts. Clann played very well in the semi final and final to clinch the coveted cup. The hard fought victory was a testament to the effort and commitment shown by the players throughout the season. The first half of the final proved to be a close affair and the match was in the balance at half time. A great defensive display, with a strong midfield effort and some clinical finishing by the forwards, insured that as the match moved to a climax, Clann pulled away to clinch a great win.
Clann na nGael squad: Paul McManus, Adam Harney, Conor Costello, Liam Donnelly, Eoghan Fallon, David Fortune, Oisín Lennon, Séa Henry, Calum O'Brien, Michael McManus, Michael Hanley, Neil Macken, Ruairí Lenehan, Thomas Bannon, Conor Farrell, Sean Ryan, Michael McManus, Oisín Rock, Micheál Griffin, Aaron Wall, Jack McManus.
