Clann na nGael Notes

Ladies Notes
Hard Luck to the Nolan & Co., Taxation Consultants sponsored Clann U-14 girls who were defeated in the Division 1A Championship Final in Woodmount on Sunday by St. Brigid’s. In the end St. Brigids edged it by a single point 1-6 to 1-5 but Clann will rue several missed chances in a match they dominated in general play. Clann were first to score with a point from Ciara Quinn and this was followed by a point from Shauna Connell but St Brigids scored a fortunate goal that put them ahead. Then St. Brigid’s Sarah Kelly scored the first of her 4 first half points. Ciara Quinn scored a free for Clann after 18 minutes while Therese Lennon was unlucky to hit the crossbar with a fierce shot. Ruth McManus scored a excellent point towards the end of the first half to leave the scoreline 1-4 to 0-4 in favour of St. Brigid’s. Ciara Quinn added another free early in the second half but Clann were still kicking the wides. St Brigids added two further points but Ciara Quinn scored a cracking goal to leave the bare minimum between the sides with 5 minutes to go. But the equaliser never came. It was a disappointing end to what has been a great year for these girls, with some of the panel bagging National Schools, U-12 Division 1 and U-14 Division 3 and Feile titles. Thanks to all that helped out in particular Mickey Dunning and Terry O’Neill. Clann would like to wish St. Brigid’s Andrea McDermott a speedy recovery after receiving a unfortunate knee injury in the opening minute of the match.
Clann: Orla Ward, Renee Naughton, Leanne Ward, Aoibhinn Golden, Marissa Murray, Orlagh Shine, Damilola Omotosho, Shauna Connell 0-1, Ciara Quinn 1-3, Ruth McManus 0-1, Saoirse McManus, Therese Lennon, Shauna Bannon, Sarah O’Sullivan, Ashley Rose Coyle. Subs: Yvonne Curley, Hazel Menton, Ciara Costello, Lisa Dolan, Claire Murray, Nicole Meehan, Grainne O’Neill, Lauren McDonnell.

Minor Girls
The minor girls had their third win of the championship when defeating Strokestown away on Saturday on a scoreline of 4-9 to 0-8. Niamh O’ Brien 1-2, Blana Gately 2-3, Gillian Egan 1-2 and Kayleigh Dunning 0-1 were the Clann scorers but a solid defence and midfield gave Clann a great platform for victory along some great saves from Katie Ward in Goal. On Bank Holiday Monday Clann also defeated St Mary's, Tulsk in Johnstown 5-13 to 2-9. This has guaranteed them a semi-final spot. Scorers were Gillian Egan 3-2 Blana Gately 0-5 Michelle Harney-Nolan 1-2 Niamh O'Brien 1-1 Orla O'Neill0-2 Aisling Lennon 0-1. Next weekend Clann play Western Gaels away on Sunday in their final group match.

Clann na nGael Notes

Under 14 Girls - Division 3A
Clann na nGael Cubs 1-6 Kilmore 1-5
Congratulations to the Nolan & Co., Taxation Consultants sponsored Clann U-14 Cubs who won the Division 3A Championship Final in Tulsk on Saturday last against a gallant Kilmore side. Played in lovely weather conditions, Clann got off to good start and Claire Flannery struck a superb goal into the roof of the net after 4 minutes. This was followed by a well worked point by Sinead Farrell a minute later. Despite lots of possession Clann failed to add to their tally for ten minutes before corner forward Claire Flannery fired over the bar. Again this was followed immediately by a point from Sinead Farrell. At this stage Kilmore were starting to win more and more possession and had two points on the board from Aideen burke and Siobhan Hook, before Nicole Meehan pointed from 25 metres to leave Clann five points to the good at the break. Within 30 seconds of the restart Aoife Callaghan fly kicked over the bar to put Clann in a commanding lead but Kilmore however fought back and started to dominate in the possession stakes. They managed to reduce the arrears to four points before Nicole Meehan responded for Clann after 21 minutes. Kilmore replied with a point and wasted several opportunities before a great goal deep in injury time set up a climatic finish. However the referee signalled the full-time whistle on the kick-out much to the relief of the Clann support. Clann had some terrific performances in defence from Grainne O’Neill, Lauren McDonnell, Claire Murray, Shauna Connell was excellent throughout in midfield while Nicole Meehan, Claire Flannery and Sinead Farrell were the pick of the forwards.
Team: Carol Griffin, Grainne O’Neill, Renee Naughton, Lauren McDonnell, Anna O’Loughlin, Claire Murray, Ciara Connaughton, Leanne Ward, Shauna Connell, Valerie Oyiki, Nicole Meehan 0-2 (Capt), Caoimhe Lennon, Yvonne Harney, Sinead Farrell 0-2, Claire Flannery 1-1, Kursty Warby, Ethel McManus, Aoife Callinan 0-1, Niamh Quinn, Amy Quinn, Laoise Henry, Shauna Naughton, Sarah Ward, Emma Rock, Lucy Nally.

Under 14 Girls - Division 1A
The U-14 Division 1A Final will take place in Woodmount between Clann and St Brigids at 3pm next Sunday 24th October. St Brigids defeated Clann in the opening match in August 4-7 to 0-4 but two years ago in the U-12 Final Clann edged their neighbours by the bare minimum in a titanic battle after a replay. So the Club are looking for everyone to come out and support the girls on Sunday.

Minor Ladies
Clann na nGael 3-11 St. Brigids 3-9
The minor girls had their second win of the championship when defeating neighbours St. Brigids in Kiltoom on Friday night. Clann led 0-7 to 0-5 at the break but soon started to pull away with goals from Niamh O’Brien only for St. Brigids to come back. Michelle Harney-Nolan grabbed a late goal to secure the win. Next weekend Clann play Strokestown away on Saturday while on the Bank Holiday Monday they play St Mary’s in Johnstown.
Team: Katie Ward, Ciava Dunning, Rosa Shine, Caroline O’Neill, Deirdre O’Neill, Kim Finlass, Jennifer Duignan, Martina O’Brien, Orla O’Neill 0-2, Aisling Lennon 0-1, Blana Gately 0-3, Gillian Egan, Michelle Harney-Nolan 1-6, Niamh O’Brien 2-0, Aoife McManus. Subs: Saoirse McManus, Ciara Quinn.

Clann na nGael Notes

Knockcroghery Fair Blitz
On Sunday week last, Clann na nGael under 12 boys once again played in the tournament which is organised each year by St. Domnicks GAA Club. The competing clubs this year were Clann, St. Domnicks, Kilbride and St. Ciarans. Clann reached the Shield Final this year where they overcame Kilbride after a very close game. Clann would like to thank St. Domnicks for inviting them into this tournament.

Under 10 League
The Tormey Solicitors/Clann na nGael U-10 league has been running all summer. The teams playing in it this year were Athlone, Ballinasloe, Caltra, Mountbellew, St. Bridgets, St. Domnicks, Padraig Pearses and Clann. The finals of the league have been taking place in recent weeks in Johnstown. On the 15th Sepember St. Bridgets beat Athlone in an excellent “B” Final. On the following evening Ballinasloe overcame Padraig Pearses in the “C” Final after a very close game and on Thurs evening last Clann edged out St. Domnicks in the “A” Final after a titanic struggle. The “D” Final between Caltra and Mountbellew is due to take place on Sun 3rd Oct. Clann would like to thank all the clubs who competed in the tournament and Tormey Solicitors for once again sponsoring it.
The final of the U-10 tournament brought the curtain down on a very eventful season for the U-10s. The management would like to thank all the players for their attendance at training and games and their parents and grandparents for providing transport for same. Without this, there wouldn’t be a team.

Under 14 Girls
Congratulations to the U-14 girls teams, sponsored by Nolan & Co. Taxation Consultants, who both qualified for the county finals. The Lions qualified for the Division 1A Final by virtue of a good win over St Ciarans 3-9 to 0-7 on Sunday in Johnstown. Second half goals by Ciara Quinn (2) and Shauna Bannon got Clann into the final where they meet neighbours St. Brigids once again. The Final will probably be played Sunday 24th October.
The U-14 Cubs also had a narrow win in a pulsating Division 3A semi-final against Four Roads played under lights in Johnstown on Monday. Clann lead by 8 points at the break 2-5 to 0-3 but Four Roads soon reduced the lead to a solitary point before Caoimhe Lennon and a great goal from Shauna Connell put Clann 5 points up with a couple of minutes to play. Four Roads struck back with a free and then a brilliant individual goal but the final whistle sounded soon afterwards for a great win for Clann. They will meet Kilmore in the final this weekend coming. Final score 3-6 to 2-8.
