Passionfruit Theatre Company - call for support

Midlands to lose €100,000 theatre venue? A call for support

The Passionfruit Theatre Company, a non-profit organisation in Athlone, was founded five years ago, and has been in its' venue at 9 Northgate Street, Athlone, for over a year.

Two years ago, the premises was an empty shell, and 100,000 euros in public funding, individual contributions and community donations went into making the venue what it is today.

Sadly, in January 2009, Joe Ducke, the founder and driving force behind Passionfruit, passed away suddenly. In the following months, the landlords terminated the lease. In the Westmeath Independent, Brian Burford of the Athlone Lodge of the Freemasons is quoted as stating that
'the lease was finished because one of the two people on the lease had died and the other was no longer involved. Mr Burford stated that "refurbishment work" would now be carried out at the premises, and that the lease "will be up for renewal to anyone who wants it, in due course" '
(Westmeath Independent, Wednesday 20 May 2009)

In the past year, the Passionfruit Theatre company has hosted 5 drama productions and over 60 musical acts, both local and international, and has been a valuable platform for many local musicians and aspiring actors.

The plans for the 2009/2010 season include the staging of the late Joe Ducke's last play, a series of free public lectures and workshops, and another series of concerts.

A public meeting was called to discuss the future of Passionfruit Theatre at 9 Northgate Street, in which the following information came to light publicly:
  • The Passionfruit Theatre Company is a non-profit organisation. The company is not in financial difficulty and any rumours to the contrary are unfounded. The rent for the premises is paid via direct debit every month, and this has been carried out without fail over the duration of the tenancy at 9 Northgate Street.
  • The Passionfruit Theatre Company has never received any official complaint from the landlords regarding noise levels during music concerts, problems with drama productions or other nuisances. The company has never received any complaints from the neighbours of the venue at 9 Northgate Street.
  • The company received no official advance notice of the termination of the lease.
  • Over 100,000 euros in public and private funding and community donations has gone into the renovation of the venue at 9 Northgate Street.
The Passionfruit Theatre company has been a community undertaking from the very start; we are now appealing to the community for support. If you feel that you can contribute in any way to keep this wonderful venue open, please, let yourself be heard. You can help us by circulating this information as widely as possible. We are sure the closure of this wonderful venue would be of absolutely no benefit to the community.

Stephen Ducke

Clann na nGael Notes

Ladies U14 Feile Final
St Ciarans 5-2 Clann na nGael 1-12
Clann na nGael U14 girls were narrowly defeated in Four Roads on Tuesday last by St Ciarans in the Feile Final. Clann suffered an early blow when losing midfielder Ciara Galvin to a hand injury. St Ciarans were quick to settle and with Sinead Doolan in great form were first to score registering 2 earl goals. Clann replied with a goal from Ashley-Rose Coyle and two points from Kayleigh Dunning to leave the half time score 3-2 to 1-2 in St Ciarans favour. Clann would rue the many shots at goal that landed in the grateful hands of the St Ciarans goalkeeper.
Clann started the second half at a blistering pace and attacked the St Ciarans goals for long periods scoring several points. Honor Ennis, the St Ciarans goalie was magnificent repelling these attacks and made a series of fantastic saves. Points from Orla O’Neill, Kayleigh Dunning and Rebecca Naughton reduced the lead to four points before Rachel Fitzmaurice lifted St Ciarans again with a looped effort which nestled in the far corner for St Ciaran’s. Substitute Aoife Brandon scored a goal on 18 minutes for St Ciarans to leave Clann fighting an uphill battle. Despite hitting the St Ciarans crossbar, lady luck desserted Clann and the goal that was required never came. Clann replied with points from Ruth McManus, Rebecca Naughton and Kayleigh Dunning to leave 2 points between the sides, but with St Ciarans midfielders Amy Whyte and Shauna Fitzmaurice dropping back to help in their defence, Clann were never able to catch the St Ciarans girls. The girls showed tremendous fighting qualtities in the second half and hopefully they will bounce back in the championship. The club would like to wish Ciara Galvin a speedy recovery from her injury.
Clann na nGael: Marissa Murray, Orla Ward, Ciara Costello, Aileen McEvilly, Sarah O’Sullivan, Aoibhin Golden, Ciara Connaughton, Ciara Galvin, Rebecca Naughton 0-4, Ciara Quinn, Kayleigh Dunning 0-6, Ashley-Rose Coyle 1-0, Hazel Menton, Orla O’Neill 0-1, Saoirse McManus.
Subs: Ruth McManus 0-1, Sarah O’Loughlin, Shauna Bannon.

Lá na gClub

GAA clubs across the world will mark the GAA's 125th Anniversary on Sunday 10th May 2009.

Lá na gClub is nearly upon us, and a small group of Clann members are very busy at the moment putting everything in place for the big day. You can play your part by attending this historic day, and enjoying the many activities taking place around the club. May 10 will be the official date for the opening of our New Pitch and our Clann na nGael Museum within the Clubhouse in Johnstown.

Our day will start with Mass at 11.30am in the Clubhouse followed by a parade with the Athlone Monksland Marching Band and all our underage teams marching around our main pitch to the opening or the New Pitch. We will be opening our New Pitch with a blessing after Mass and this will be followed by releasing 125 balloons off the Main Pitch to mark the 125th G.A.A. Celebration.

At approximately 3.30pm we will have a Match on our main pitch involving players past and present in a fun game for all the family to enjoy. If you have any friends or family who would like to play or attend in Johnstown bring them along. Everyone is welcome.

We are still collecting items that might be of interest in the Museum and if you have anything old photos, Medals, Jerseys, Newspaper articles we would love to copy these items and return to owners. If you have anything of interest please bring to Clubhouse on Monday evenings between 7:00pm and 8:00pm. So when you are asked in a few years time "Where were you on May 10 2009 ?" You will answer " I had a great day in Johnstown, the home of Clann na nGael"
