Clann na nGael Notes

Fundraising
We have come to the end of the first phase in our €600 donations for the New Pitch Scheme. Over the next two weeks we have a number of calls to make to people who asked us to call back, and to a few who we were not available when we initially called. This phase will then be finished and we would like to thank all the our members and supporters who have given so generously with both their time and support to this valuable scheme. If you are interested in getting involved in this scheme please contact either Padraig 087-8315300 or Alona 087-6595709.

Ladies U16 Championship
Clann na nGael 7-7 Kilglass Gaels 2-4
Clann U16 girls had a good win over Kilglass Gaels on Tuesday evening in Johnstown. Kimberley Finlass got the ball rolling with a good point which was followed by a goal from Orla O'Neill. Gillian Egan and Aisling Lennon added further points before two goals late in the first half from Katie Ward and Anna Shine more or less finished the game as a contest. Kilglass got a penalty just before half-time but the excellent Caroline O'Neill saved comfortably. Two superb goals from Gillian Egan were added to by goals from Kayleigh Dunning and Orla O'Neill before Karen Nicholson rounded off the scoring with a well taken point.

Western Gaels 0-4 Clann na nGael 6-8
Clann played their second championship match in five days on Saturday with a trip to Frenchpark. They topped their group with a hard fought victory over Western Gaels. It was only with five goals in the last fifteen minutes that made the scoreline look so comprehensive. Once again Caroline O'Neill was excellent in goal but she also had great support from Jennifer Duignan, Sorcha McManus, Katie Rock and Amy Curley in front of her. A superb early goal from Gillian Egan settled Clann and further points from Gillian and Ciara Galvin gave Clann an interval lead of seven points. They had corner back Lianne O Connor to thank for blocking a 13 metre free which was destined for goal.

The Clann forwards cut loose in the second half following points from Ciara Galvin, Gillian Egan, Rebecca Naughton and Ciava Dunning, they scored a good goal after a neat finish from Ciava Dunning. A brace of goals each from Kayleigh Dunning and Gillian Egan caught the eye at the end with some great approach play from Kimberley Finlass, Anna Shine and Aisling Lennon helping to set up the scores.

Panel: Caroline O'Neill, Lianne O'Connor, Jennifer Duignan, Sorcha McManus, Katie Rock, Amy Curley, Aileen McEvilly, Gillian Wall, Louise Curley, Kimberley Finlass, Orla O'Neill, Rebecca Naughton, Kayleigh Dunning, Aisling Lennon, Gillian Egan, Karen Nicholson, Ciava Dunning, Katie Ward, Anna Shine, Ciara Galvin, Emma Lennon.

Recognising a Stroke

The following simple guidelines were received by email. They offer some simple and practical ways of recognising a stroke. If in doubt, always contact your GP or the emergency services by calling 999 or 112.

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke... totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognised, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognise the symptoms of a stroke.

Recognising a Stroke
Remember the '3' steps, S-T-R. It is said that a bystander can recognise a stroke by asking the person three simple questions:

  • S: Ask the individual to SMILE.
  • T: Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently, e.g. it is sunny out today)
  • R: Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 999 or 112 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

Another step is to ask the person to 'stick' out their tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

Referee Training
A referees training course will be held in Roscommon commencing within the next 4 weeks. The course will cater for new referees in both hurling and football. It is important that every club would have at least 1 referee. Unfortunately this is not the case at present as a number of clubs including senior clubs do not have a referee to take charge of an under-age game. The course will be held over 3-4 nights depending on numbers. The tutors for the course will be Seamus Clogher and Sean Martin. Clubs who have people interested should contact Liam Martin in the County Board Office with the persons name and mobile telephone number

Greetings from Queensland

The following email was received from Helen Turvey nee Kilroy, who lives in Queensland, Australia. If you can help Helen or have any information, please contact us and we'll put you in touch. Thanks.

Attached is a photo of my great grandfather who came from The Batteries, Athlone and his niece, Delia Kilroy (daughter of James Kilroy & Margaret Macken) on a trip back to his country from Australia in 1910. On his trip back to Ireland he encouraged his brother James to allow other family members to come out to Australia. James allowed Delia and this is a photograph taken prior to leaving for Australia. Delia's son (Bryan Cameron) is living in Brisbane and he provided me with this photograph from
his photographic collections. Maybe someone can help me trace back my ancestors beyond my great grandfather's parents, Thomas & Catherine Kilroy (nee Hynes).

Wishing everyone well, we are all sweltering today in the heat and in Queensland today we have smoke from the Victorian Fires.

Thanks for your time.
Helen Turvey nee Kilroy
