Christopher McManus, R.I.P.

Chris McManus, R.I.P.
The community of Drum is in shock this weekend having learned of the tragic death of Christopher McManus in Nigeria. Christopher's grandfather William was a native of Ardnanure, Drum. Christopher, a 28 year-old quantity surveyor from Oldham, Greater Manchester, had been working as a contract worker on a construction project in northern Nigeria when he and an Italian colleague were captured in May 2011 and held hostage until their death this week during a failed rescue attempt.

Christopher's grandfather Dr. William McManus was born in Ardnaure to parents Edmond and Anne, and William was recorded as being three months old in the 1911 Census. Both he and his eldest brother Edward studied medicine at University College Galway having previously attended Drumpark National School and the Marist Brothers' School in Athlone. Edward worked as a doctor in Brideswell and later in Roscommon, while William and his wife Josie Gilleran of The Walk, Roscommon moved to England where he worked in private practice in Oldham, Greater Manchester. Their son Michael is Christopher's father.

William always maintained a keen interest in his native county, and the family have many relatives in Drum, including the O'Connell family of Glendeer Farm. William McManus' sister Margaret was married to Michael John O'Connell of Kilmacormack.

We offer our sincere sympathy to Christopher's family and relations.

May he rest in peace.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Clann na nGael Notes

O'Rourke Cup
Clann na nGael 1-8 Castlerea 1-3
Eamon Harney got the Athlone Springs sponsored Clann na nGael senior team off to a winning start in the O’Rourke Cup league on Sunday with a workman-like win against Castlerea in Johnstown. In the first half, and playing against a stiff breeze, Clann found scores hard to come by. Enda Kenny drew first blood however when the Castlerea keeper was forced to pull off a fantastic save and parried the ball over the bar. There were wides from both sides before Castlerea scored their first point from a free after 23 minutes of play. Castlerea were awarded a penalty which they converted and they followed this up with a fine point from play to leave Clann facing half time four points adrift. Emmet Kenny was fouled in the square just before half time and Enda Kenny took the resulting penalty. The keeper again pulled off a great save but this time Enda followed up and slotted the ball to the net. Half time score Clann 1-1 Castlerea 1-2. Clann started the second half brightly and points from Mark Shine (free) and Cathal Shine edged them in front. Castlerea scored an equaliser from a free. Clann began to take control, and playing with the aid of the breeze Mark Shine slotted over a free and Jonathan Dunning scored from play. This pattern was repeated with two more points and Alan Dunne finished off the scoring with a fine individual point to leave five between them.
Clann na nGael team: Ronan O’Reilly; Liam Óg Naughton; Cathal Duignan; Ray Fallon; Ronan Gavin; Niall McManus; Sean Walshe; Brian Goode; Dara Shine; Alan Dunne (0-1); Mark Shine (0-3); Jonathan Dunning (0-2); Emmet Kenny; Cathal Shine (0-1); Enda Kenny (1-1).

Under 16
Clann na nGael Under 16s got off to a great start on Saturday. Our 'A' team travelled to Woodmount to play Padraic Pearses where we won on a scoreline of 4-7 to 1-6. Our 'B' team travelled to Tulsk at the same time and were also victorious on a scoreline of 3-5 to 3-4. Well done to both teams.

Tax Relief for Donations to Eligible Charities
One again letters and forms are being posted during the coming week to PAYE taxpayers in the parish who contributed €250 or more (including the second collection for maintenance fund) during 2011. If you do not receive the relevant documentation and feel that you would like to contribute, please contact the Parish Office at 090-6492171. Meanwhile we offer our sincere thanks to all those who have participated during the last few years in helping us benefit from this important source of funding, which goes towards reducing the debt for the restoration of Ss. Peter & Paul's Church.
