Clann na nGael Notes

Senior Football Championship Round 1
Clann na nGael 3-9 St. Croan's 2-12
Senior football championship draw experts did it again in Kiltoom on Saturday evening with a hard earned draw with St Croans in the first round of the championship. Clann started brightly and had three good points on the score board in the first 5 minutes Enda Kenny, Matt Scally and Donal Shine from a free. St Croans replied with a well taken point. St Croans then began to play with some belief and were awarded a penalty on 11 minuets which they converted to take the lead. Clann replied with a well taken Matt Scally goal following good work from Cathal Shine. Jonathan Dunning then scored a point before St Croans scores two more points. Matt scored another long range point before St Croans popped over five unanswered points to take control at half time.
St Croans started with the first score to lead by four points until Donal Shine was fouled in front of the goal to be awarded a penalty which he dispatched the back of the net. Donal then scored two long range points before Matt scored a great goal to leave Clann in control of the game. St Croans fought back but Ronan O Reilly was alert and pulled off a great save. At this point Clann were awarded a free out from the edge of the box. Strangely the referee then turned to David Flynn and awarded a red card which baffled the entire attendance. This turned the game on it’s head and St Croans began to take control. They scored a goal and a point to level the game before Jonathan Dunning replied with a point to edge Clann in front again. St Croans scored two points to take the lead as time added on approached. Donal Shine scored from a free outside the 50 mark to draw level and was just outside with another long range effort before the referee called time.
Clann now have a long wait for the next round which probably will not be played until August sometime. It was disappointing not to win a game which we were well capable of. We would still have to get a result from some of the other two games in our group and the lads behaved well to secure the draw, despite the bizarre sending off of David Flynn.
Clann Team: Ronan O’Reilly; Niall McManus; Cathal Duignan; Darragh Egan; Ronan Gavin; Sean Walshe; David Flynn; Garry Shine; Graham Pettit; Alan Dunne; Cathal Shine; Jonathan Dunning(0-2); Enda Kenny(0-1); Donal Shine(1-4); Matt Scally(2-2). Subs used: Brian Goode for Niall McManus, Ultan Harney for Garry Shine, Stephen Flynn for Alan Dunne, Emmet Rock for Enda Kenny.

Clann na nGael Notes

Senior Ladies
Clann na nGael 1-13 Oran 2-6
Pride of place this week goes to the Clann na nGael Senior Ladies team who are Division 2 league champions and captured the first piece of silverware of the year in winning the league final against a very fit and physical Oran team in a hard fought game in Knockcroghery last Saturday evening. The game was played at a very fast pace with both teams giving it everything. Oran opened the scoring with a point but Clann replied with two points from Kayleigh Dunning. Clann were rocked by a goal and point from Oran’s Annette McGeeney and lost Rosa Shine after a clash of heads. Clann then stepped up the pace and scored three points without reply from Kayleigh Dunning (2) and Niamh Fallon.
Just as Clann had got back into the game Oran struck with another goal and point on the 23rd and 24th minute. It looked like it was all going wrong for Clann when they were forced to make another change in defence with Kelly Killian going off injured. But Clann finished the half on top with points from Niamh and Martina O’Brien. The second half started as the first half finished with Clann getting more possession but finding it hard to get scores. Kayleigh Dunning scored a point after two minutes only for Oran to reply with one of their own. Then Clann got the upper hand for the rest of the half and outscored Oran by 1-5 to 0-1, Orla O’Neill with the goal after 21 minutes of the half. Clann’s fitness really showed in the last fifteen minutes, getting first to the ball and laying off good possession to other players. This was a great team effort from the whole panel.
Team: C O’Neill, A Egan, R Shine, K Finlass, K Killian, A Shine, M O’Brien (0-1), O O’Neill (1-0), N Fallon (0-1), K Watson, C Fallon, K Dunning (0-8), N O’Brien (0-1), A Golden, B Gately (0-1), G Wall, M Sweeney, R Naughten, K Doran, E Goode, M Shine, M Gately, L O’Connor, A McEvilly, C Dunning.

Facing the Future: Information and Open Day at Drum Community Centre

An information and open day will be held in Drum Community Centre, Athlone on Saturday 19th May from 12 midday to 4pm as part of National Volunteering Week. The centre has been open since 1988 and many of the current members have been involved for many years, some of them from the very beginning. They're looking for new members to get involved, either as a volunteer at Drum Bingo or as a member of the centre committee, and are welcoming 'the next generation' to bring some fresh ideas and energy to the centre.

The Drum area has changed dramatically over the last 25 years, and has welcomed many new residents and families who have made Drum their home. While many people drive by the centre on a daily basis, some have never been inside it. This is an open invitation to drop in for a cup of tea and a chat, or just have a look around and see the facilities available at the centre.

“We're lucky to have a first-class community facility which is fully paid for”, explains committee secretary Aidan McEvilly. “All we want is for more people to get involved and use the facilities.”

Drum Community Centre
The open day provides an opportunity for people to come along without commitment and have a look around or get more information about the centre in an informal environment. The centre will be open from 12 midday to 4pm, and all facilities and rooms within the building will accessible on the day, including the sports hall, lounge, meeting room and kitchen.

One aim of the event is to find new people who might be interested in volunteering at Drum Bingo, which is held every Friday night at Drum Community Centre. The work ranges from selling books to stacking chairs, and even if you can only give half an hour each week, or one night per month, you would be very welcome to join in.

Another aim is to increase membership of the community centre. The company is limited by guarantee, which means it has no shareholders and the liability of members is limited. Any adult may be a member and applications for membership are welcome. Members who are elected to the Board of Directors are then responsible for making decisions about the operation of the centre.

Ionad Pobail an Droma
National Volunteering Week is a celebration of the work done by volunteers across the country, and also an opportunity for more people to get active in their community through voluntary work.

"The door is open for anyone who wants to get involved. We look forward to seeing you" concludes Mr McEvilly. Those who are unable to attend can find further details on the Community of Drum website at www.drum.ie or visit the centre any Friday night during bingo.

Aghaidh ar an Todhchaí: Lá Eolais agus Lá Oscailte ag Ionad Pobail an Droma

Táthar ar thóir oibrithe deonacha ag an ionad pobail - daoine atá sásta a bheith mar chomhalta boird nó mar oibrí deonach ag an mbiongó gach seachtain. "Tá an t-ádh orainn go bhfuil áiseanna den chéad scoth gan fiacha againn anseo sa Droim, ní theastaíonn uainn ach daoine chun leas a bhaint astu agus cúnamh a thabhairt dúinn" arsa Aodán Mac an Mhílidh, rúnaí an choiste.

Tá cuireadh oscailte roimh phobal an cheantair buail isteach le haghaidh cupán tae agus comhrá, nó chun súil a chaitheamh thart ar an ionad, nó chun ceist a chur. Beidh míle fáilte romhat.
