Clann na nGael Notes

AGM
Clann na nGael Club AGM now scheduled for Sunday 19th of December @ 5pm in the clubhouse in Johnstown. All members requested to attend. New members welcome.

Scór na nÓg
Clann na nGael competed in three sections at the County Final of Scór na nÓg held at the Dean Crowe Theatre, Athlone on Sunday last, 12th December. Depsite the tremndous effort by all involved, there was to be no silver-wear for our members who competed in Solo Sining, Instrumental Group and Novelty Act.

We would like to thank Ciara Costello who took part in the solo singing, Melissa Moloney, Cian & Evan Cunniffe who made up the music group and equally so those involved in the Novelty Act - Niall Carr, Leah Maloney, Katie Rock and James Milton - all of who put in the hours over the last few weeks and we wouldn't have got there without them. Moreover, we need to thank the mentors and aids of these members: Emmet Durney and Teresa Milton who worked with the Novelty Act; Shane Cunniffe who helped out the music group and Brian Dolan for accompanying Ciara Costello in the Solo Singing. In addition, we should praise Tom O'Connor who taught some steps to the Clann na nGael Figure Dancing Team and to Sean Murray for coaching the Quiz Team who were both unfortunately beaten in the county semi final.
Sincere thanks to everyone who helped out in any way.

Roscommon Ladies Minor Division 1A Final
Strokestown 3-17 Clann na nGael 2-6
Clann were beaten in the Minor Division 1A Championship Final in Woodmount on Sunday as holders Strokestown retained the title. The scoreline didn’t reflect the tightness of the match for long periods, and scores were level with a little over 15 minutes remaining but the ‘Town side proceeded to score 1-11 without reply as they took advantage of the stiff breeze on their backs. Clann on their part played some lovely football for periods and lead 1-2 to no score after five minutes and when a Gillian Egan goal levelled matters in the second half, it looked like anyone’s game but that proved to be their final score.

Apart from a bitter breeze, conditions were perfect in Woodmount with the pitch in good order despite the arctic weather gripping the country. Clann got a tonic start when full-forward Niamh O’Brien dispatched a great goal, low into the bottom corner. Rebecca Naughton, Michelle Harney-Nolan, Martina O’Brien and Orla O’neill were winning throughout the first half and Clann added points from Aisling Lennon (2) Niamh O’Brien, Blana Gately, Gillian Egan and Orla O’Neill to trail at the break by a point. But thanks to some good saves from the Strokestown ‘keeper Clann didn’t hammer home their advantage with the breeze and they were to pay for this in the second period.

Strokestown started the second-half the brightest and soon were putting pressure on the Clann defence to go 3 points up. Clann wasted some good possession before Gillian Egan stepped inside her marker to drill a brilliant goal into the far corner from a tight angle. This score looked like it would spark Clann to further glory but within a minute Strokestown regained the lead with a point. At this stage of the match the Strokestown attack were pressurising the Clann defence in possession to good avail, as they tacked on several points before a speculative shot ended up in the back of the net to end any Clann hopes.

Overall Strokestown were the better team but Clann didn’t play up to their potential on the day, not recapturing the performance that beat Strokestown earlier in the competition but still added much to a high standard of football. Well done to the management team of Kevin Naughton, Mary Duffy, Kathleen Doran-Rourke and Niamh Fallon.
