Clann na nGael Notes

Senior Championship
Clann na nGael 0-13 Elphin 0-11
Clann na nGael’s Athlone Springs sponsored senior team secured a well deserved win over Elphin in the senior championship on Sunday evening. Clann started in blistering form and were seven points to no score up before Elphin secured their first score on the twenty minute mark. Jonathan Dunning fisted the first point before Donie Shine slotted over a 45. Donie scored two more points from play either side of a good Enda Kenny point. Alan Dunne slotted over a free and followed up with another point from play. Elphin began to dig deep as Clann eased up a bit and they scored three points without reply, two from frees. Jonathan Dunning slotted over another point. Elphin finished the half the stronger with two good points to leave the half time score Clann 8 points, Elphin 5.
Jonathan Dunning started the scoring in the second half and Ronan Gavin followed up with a good point on the run. Elphin replied with two points to peg Clann back. Alan Dunne, Enda Kenny and Donie Shine stretched Clann’s lead to six points with three more points but Elphin were not going to give in easy. They scored four points from frees in the final ten minutes while Clann hit four wides. Clann backs were well on top, however and ran out winners on a scoreline of thirteen points to eleven. This sets up a top of the group clash with Castlerea in Johnstown at 4pm.

Intermediate Championship
Clann na nGael 1-9 St. Dominic's 0-9
Clann na nGael’s Joe Brennan sponsored second team earned a hard-fought but important win in the Intermediate championship against St. Dominic's in Johnstown last Saturday evening. Clann started the brightest, and had two points on the board after three minutes - one from a free and the other from play, both from Darragh Lennon. St. Dominic's opened their account on ten minutes with a point from a free by Conor Fallon. Paul Dolan levelled the scoring and Conor Fallon slotted over two more frees to take the lead. Paul Dolan converted another free to leave St. Dominic's 5 points to 2 up as the half drew near an end. Ian Cooney slotted over a Clann free into injury time and Clann went in two points adrift. Second half and both teams exchanged points from frees to leave it 6 points to 4 for St. Dominic's and Conor Fallon extended their lead with a well taken point. Clann began to play better at this stage however and when Darragh Pettit made a great run down the left wing and passed inside to Derek Egan, he was taken out of it and the referee pointed to the spot for a penalty. Darragh Lennon converted and the sides were level, 1-4 to 0-7. St. Dominic's hit a 45 against the post and wing back, James Miley was quickest to react and fisted the ball over the bar. Clann levelled again with a Darragh Lennon free before David Henry, Ian Cooney and Darragh Lennon gave Clann the lead with three well-taken points from play. St. Dominic's responded with a point from Aidan Weir. Darragh Lennon restored the three point advantage with a converted free from out on the sideline. Clann ran out winners 1-9 to 0-9.
