Ladies U-14 Division 1A Championship Final
Clann na nGael 1-13 St Ciarans 1-0
The Thomas Nolan & Co. Taxation Consultants sponsored Clann na nGael U-14 girls were crowned County Champions on Saturday in Kiltoom. This is the second year in a row that Clann are U-14 kingpins but the performance last Saturday was a step above anything seen from this team before. From the throw-in Clann put constant pressure on the St Ciarans defence and didn’t relent this pressure for the whole of the first half. Kayleigh Dunning fired Clann ahead in the first minute with a point from play and this was quickly added to by a point from Hazel Menton. This was followed by a an excellent point from Rebecca Naughton on the run and on 11 minutes Saoirse McManus extended the lead to four points. Despite St Ciarans best endeavours they couldn’t penetrate a Clann rearguard where the fullback line of Aileen McEvilly, Ciara Costello and Aoibhin Golden were repelling all attacks. After 15 minutes Rebecca Naughton got her second score which was quickly followed by another point from Saoirse McManus. The last five minutes of the half belonged to Kayleigh Dunning as she split the posts on three occasions, two of these points coming from very tight angles. Ashley-Rose Coyle was on hand to score Clann’s penultimate point of the half to leave St Ciarans with an uphill battle.
But St Ciarans lifted their game just after the interval and pressure on the Clann defence resulted in the ball being fouled in the small square and a penalty being awarded. This was dispatched to the net and the lead was down to 7 points. Orla Ward in the Clann goal made a point blank save at this point before the Clann duo of Ciara Galvin and Orla O’Neill re-established their dominance in midfield and Kayleigh Dunning was on hand to avail of this with a point on 5 minutes. A good run from Kayleigh Dunning forced St Ciarans goalkeeper Honor Ennis into another great save but the rebound was eventually finished to the net by Kayleigh and the match was over as a contest. Clann had emptied their substitute’s bench by this stage and there was no change in the scoreboard for 15 minutes until Orla O’Neill scored a point following a run through the centre on 23 minutes. The same girl repeated the trick two minutes into injury time to round of the scoring. Clann’s defence as a unit were excellent while there were some great passing moves around the field resulting in some fine scores with Rebecca Naughton and Kayleigh Dunning the fulcrum of these attacks. Clann’s Captain Ciara Galvin accepted the Cup from County Board Chairperson Marie McAleer after the game. Congratulations to the management team of Terry O’Neill, Mickey Dunning and Aisling Egan whose hard work paid off on the day.
