U-14 Division 1 Championship
Clann na nGael Lions 3-13 Padraig Pearses 2-5
Clann completed their final group match with victory over Padraig Pearses in Johnstown on Sunday evening and in doing so topped the group. The game was slow to take off with Clann only having four points to show after 25 minutes, two each from Shauna Bannon and Ashley- Rose Coyle. Then Rebecca Naughton scored points before Kirsty Warby scored a good goal to leave Clann leading 1-6 to 1-2 at the break. Kirsty got a touch on a long ball into the goalmouth to find the net once more in the first minute of the second half. Pearses full forward Danielle Kenny got her second goal to reduce the lead once more on ten minutes and Orla Ward in the Clann goal had to be alert to deflect a powerfully struck free over the bar from the same girl. Points from Ciara Quinn, Shauna Bannon, Ashley-Rose Coyle, Orlagh O’Neill and Saoirse McManus put Clann in the driving seat and on 22 minutes full forward Kirsty Warby scrambled her third goal to end the game as a contest. Clann had some good performances, with Ruth McManus, Ciara Costelloe, Aoibheann Curley and Ciara Quinn solid at the back, midfielders Ciara Galvin and Orlagh O’Neill showing a lot of enterprise and the half-forward line of Shauna Bannon, Rebecca Naughton and Ashley-Rose Coyle the pick of the forwards. They will now play their semi-final in two weeks. Best of the luck to the girls as they compete in the U-14 sevens in Dublin at the weekend.
